Area Coordinator
Job Summary
The Area Coordinator will report to the Director of Residence Life and is primarily responsible for managing all components of an assigned residential area of the campus. This includes student staff supervision, community engagement, student conduct, and serving in the on-call rotation. Susquehanna University is a 4-year residential campus with approximately 2,300 students. This is a live-in position with on-campus housing and a meal plan. The position is defined as an exempt position under FLSA regulations.
Specific Responsibilities
- Supervise and cultivate a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) with individual and team meetings, paraprofessional development, and periodic appraisals.
- Develop and deliver departmental initiatives, including RA training, RA selection, recognition, and community programming.
- Establish and maintain a healthy, actively engaged residential community and communicate with residents living in the area through individual contacts, meetings, and facilitated discussions.
- Develop familiarity with campus resources to ensure timely and efficient referrals when needed.
- Maintain office hours that provide access to students and be available and visible at departmental and divisional programs and events.
- Serve as a conduct officer for the University Conduct process.
- Participate in division-wide committees, departmental leadership opportunities, programs, and events as deemed appropriate.
- Serve in an on-call professional staff rotation providing crisis intervention and response and act as onsite liaison for university partners in emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in higher education/student personnel administration, education, counseling, or related field preferred.
Experience
One year of related work experience is required. Graduate, postgraduate, or professional experience in residence life/housing, student life/student affairs, or other higher education settings is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The person in this position should have knowledge of student development theory and/or current issues and emerging trends in residence life, residential/student life curriculum, or student belonging. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of inclusive community practices that support the success and well-being of students within a residential setting. This includes experience working with students from varied backgrounds and the ability to foster a safe and welcoming living environment. They should demonstrate experience and oversight of complex logistical processes; initiative, flexibility, and an ability to multitask and meet established deadlines. They should be skilled in database management systems, crisis and emergency management and response. They should have the ability to communicate effectively across multiple platforms to various audiences, work autonomously in a team atmosphere, work under pressure, think critically, and solve problems, and operate in an office environment that may have frequent interruptions.

Additional Requirements
This full-time, 12-month position requires on-campus residency and includes occasional night and weekend work, along with participation in an on-call after-hours rotation.
Physical Demand
Position requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. The position requires the ability to move about the campus. Position requires the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. The position requires the ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machines. Working conditions are indoors. The position requires occasional night and weekend hours.
