Job Summary:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) seeks to hire a faculty member with expertise in the broad areas of quantum device engineering and quantum system engineering. Desired areas of specialization include:
- Integrated photonics and circuits for quantum technologies
- Incorporation of quantum materials into optical, opto-electronic, and electronic devices
- Qubit implementations using neutral atoms, trapped ions, superconductors, semiconductors, or wide-bandgap crystals
- Quantum instrumentation, including cryogenic hardware
- Architectures for quantum computing, networking, and sensing
The successful candidate will build a research program in ECE at UW-Madison that heavily leverages the regional quantum ecosystem through the Wisconsin Quantum Institute (WQI). Experimental research will heavily leverage the Wisconsin Centers for Nanoscale Technology, particularly the Nanoscale Fabrication Center, a 10,000 sq. ft cleanroom on campus.

ECE is a member department of WQI, a research hub at UW-Madison dedicated to advancing fundamental and applied quantum science and engineering. Through WQI, ECE faculty are connected to the regional and broader quantum ecosystem including the Chicago Quantum Exchange. In addition, ECE faculty are members of National Quantum Information Science Centers, including Q-NEXT and Hybrid Quantum Architectures and Networks (HQAN). Key Job Responsibilities:
Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and contributing to curriculum updates and innovations; mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; developing and directing a successful, extramurally funded research program; participating in departmental and university shared governance; and contributing to professional and public service. Faculty at the associate or full professor rank will also have the responsibility of leading large research proposals and center-type activities.

The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record, a vision for an innovative, significant and impactful research program and the skills to implement it, and a commitment to high-quality undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring. Associate and Full Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure standards of the UW-Madison Physical Sciences Divisional Committee and the College of Engineering.
Education:
Required Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field by the start date.
