Job Description

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of the Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for an Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Music - Director of Mariachi to begin Fall 2026.

TAMIU is a Hispanic Serving Institution with over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The university advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement and public service, and with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. For more information, please visit https://www.tamiu.edu/.

This is an open rank (tenure-track or tenured) 9-month faculty position with reduced teaching load to direct the Mariachi program. Primary duties will include teaching an applied instrument (open/unspecified), advising students, directing the TAMIU Mariachi Internacional, providing service to the department, college and university; and participating in department, college, and university initiatives. Duties also include recruiting students and actively promoting the Mariachi program in the community and on a national level at festivals and competitions. Duties also include (1) remaining active as a scholar and/or creative artist, (2) mentoring and advising students, (3) applying for external grant funding to maintain a scholarly/research agenda, and (4) engaging in community and professional outreach that highlights and enhances the visibility of TAMIU's Mariachi program and other applied teaching areas. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The College of Arts & Sciences is the largest and more comprehensive college at the university. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts has thriving programs in art, dance, music, and theater.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a Doctorate in Music, specialization in an instrument (currently open/unspecified) and scholarly/creative works commensurate with the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. Two (2) years of teaching experience are also required. We strongly encourage candidates with significant experience in establishing and supporting a mariachi program with excellence in performance and artistry and have a demonstrated ability to perform and teach an applied instrument at a high professional level to apply. Candidates with successful experience in recruiting and retaining music students, particularly in mariachi ensembles, a record of community engagement and outreach through schools, festivals, or cultural organizations and an ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to the broader music curriculum are also encouraged.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.

Application Process

The first review of applications will be 11/21/2025 and will continue until the position is filled. The completed employment application must include:

  • Letter of interest or cover letter that addresses qualifications
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Unofficial transcripts specifying conferred/ABD degree
  • Names and contact information of three current professional references
  • Links to performance videos (solo and ensemble direction)

Finalists will be invited to campus for an interview, teaching demonstration, and rehearsal/directing session with Mariachi Internacional.

Applications must be submitted online at https://www.tamiu.edu/admins/ohr/employment/. For more information, contact the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Mark Boseman, at mark.boseman@tamiu.edu.
