Position Overview
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Accounting in the College of Business and Public Administration. The faculty member will contribute to excellence in teaching, scholarship, student engagement, and service while supporting the College’s mission and maintaining compliance with AACSB International accreditation standards.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate Accounting courses, maintain Scholarly Academic status under AACSB standards, actively pursue externally funded research opportunities, advise students, participate in assessment and accreditation initiatives, and contribute to recruitment, retention, community engagement, and shared governance.
Key Responsibilities
• Teach a minimum of four undergraduate and/or graduate Accounting courses each semester, totaling 12 credit hours, using evidence-based and student-centered practices in face-to-face, hybrid, and online environments.
• Develop and revise curricula, syllabi, instructional materials, assessments, grades, and course records consistent with AACSB standards, disciplinary developments, industry needs, and University policy.
• Assess student-learning outcomes; participate in Assurance of Learning processes; and support continuous curriculum, instructional, program, and strategic improvement.
• Maintain at least 10 posted office hours each week; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; sponsor student organizations; and support career readiness and placement.
• Maintain AACSB Scholarly Academic status and an active research agenda, including at least two qualified peer-reviewed journal publications during each rolling five-year AACSB assessment period and first authorship on at least one qualified publication during each cycle.
• Present research at professional conferences, collaborate on disciplinary and interdisciplinary research, and produce additional intellectual contributions consistent with the College’s AACSB Accreditation Maintenance Plan.
• Develop competitive grant proposals and pursue externally funded grants, contracts, or sponsored projects in collaboration with internal and external research, workforce, community, and economic-development partners.
• Participate fully in AACSB and SACSCOC accreditation, institutional effectiveness, recruitment, retention, graduation, student engagement, committee service, faculty governance, professional organizations, community outreach, and University events.
• Apply annually for retention during the probationary period, pursue tenure and promotion in accordance with University policy, and perform other faculty duties assigned by authorized University leadership.
Required Qualifications
• Earned doctorate (Ph.D., D.B.A., or equivalent terminal degree), or ABD status, in accounting or an appropriate business discipline from an AACSB-accredited or regionally accredited institution, with qualifications consistent with AACSB faculty qualification standards.
• Qualifications sufficient for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on academic credentials, scholarly record, teaching effectiveness, and professional experience.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in collegiate teaching.
• Evidence of scholarly research and peer-reviewed publications.
• Ability to maintain AACSB Scholarly Academic status.
• Demonstrated commitment to student success, academic service, and shared governance.
• Demonstrated digital fluency and effective use of emerging technologies relevant to accounting education and the accounting profession.
• Strong written, oral, interpersonal, scholarly communication, organizational, project-management, assessment, collaboration, and data-informed decision-making skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Prior teaching experience at an AACSB-accredited institution and experience teaching both undergraduate and graduate business courses.
• Record of publication in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and experience with Assurance of Learning assessment and AACSB accreditation activities.
• Experience obtaining externally funded grants, contracts, or sponsored projects.
• Experience teaching online and hybrid courses; professional certification applicable to the discipline is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Attributes
• Excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate Accounting courses and proficiency with instructional technologies and learning-management systems.
• Commitment to serving, advising, mentoring, recruiting, and engaging students and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
• Evidence of scholarly productivity and the ability to publish qualified peer-reviewed journal articles and present research professionally.
• Knowledge of AACSB accreditation standards, faculty qualification requirements, Assurance of Learning, assessment, and continuous improvement.
• Leadership, collaboration, collegiality, digital fluency, early adoption of emerging technologies, and commitment to shared governance.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
Work is primarily performed in classrooms, faculty offices, conference rooms, and other University facilities. Evening, weekend, online, and off-campus assignments may occasionally be required. The position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; operate computers and instructional technology; lift or carry instructional materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and travel between campus locations, with or without reasonable accommodation. Occasional travel may be required for professional conferences, AACSB activities, recruitment, community engagement, grant activities, and other University business.
