Minimum Qualifications

A terminal degree in Graphic Communications Technology, Print and Graphic Media Technology, Graphic Communications Management, Industrial Technology (Print/Visual/Graphic Communications concentration), Technology Education, or a related area is required.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

  • Successful candidates will have university teaching experience, engagement with the graphic communications industry, and expertise in printing and imaging processes, including digital printing, flexography, offset lithography, inks and substrates, job-cost estimating, corrugated packaging, and structural design.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in the graphic communications field
  • Significant teaching experience in higher education and/or appropriate print industry experience
  • Strong track record of industry connections
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to teach all levels of graphic communications, seminar courses, and areas of specialization
  • Experience with or commitment to educating, advising, and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds and demographics.
  • A record of outstanding undergraduate teaching and accomplished scholarship in the print and digital media technology discipline;
  • Ability to stimulate the growth of the Thomas W. Reese Graphic Communications Management program;
  • Success in building and sustaining strong collaborations with industry leaders;
  • Promote interdisciplinary research efforts and facilitate industry internships;
  • Success in the acquisition of external funding.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines, particularly with Graphic Design and Screen Printing
  • Ability to teach in the Digital Foundations Program (Adobe Creative Suite) or 2D Foundations courses

Description of the Department or Unit

The Thomas W. Reese Graphic Communications Management program develops technical skills that enable students to find their niche in the vast industry of graphic communications. Students are prepared to enter the workforce in a range of roles upon graduation. Employers include Imagine Graphics, WestRock, Salem One, R.R. Donnelly, Meredith-Webb, Wright Global Graphics, Copac Global Packaging, CCL Label, Wikoff Color Corporation and many other companies.

The Department of Art is accredited by NASAD and has 47 full-time faculty members, 22 part-time faculty members, over 800 undergraduate majors, and offers degrees in Art Education, Art & Visual Culture, Graphic Communications Management, Graphic Design, Photography, and Studio Art.

The College of Fine and Applied Arts (CFAA) at Appalachian State University is a dynamic, transdisciplinary academic unit that emphasizes experiential learning and offers 30 undergraduate degree programs, one graduate degree program and 13 minors through its seven member departments: Applied Design; Art; Communication; Military Science and Leadership; Sustainable Development; Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment; and Theatre and Dance (https://cfaa.appstate.edu/).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach 6 courses per year (3 fall, 3 spring) in the Graphic Communications Management curriculum
  • Sustain scholarly research in the field of Graphic Communications.
  • Participate in departmental and university service, including collaborating with Graphic Communication Management colleagues on curriculum, program development, student advising, and Career Connections.
  • Assist with the coordination and supervision of the Graphic Communication Management program.
  • Obtain and build support for the GCM program from the printing industry and allied professions.

Suggested Salary Range: Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
