Brief Description of Duties

The Assistant or Associate Professor in Nutrition and Dietetics in the University of the District of Columbia, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) engages the scholarly activities of teaching, research, and service, to prepare innovative, evidence-based nutrition practitioners to be research and community engagement leaders by advocating for nutritional status, health, and wellness improvement in diverse and underserved communities.

This position requires the faculty member to:

  1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses with content specific to medical nutrition therapy, community/public health nutrition, nutrition assessment, counseling/behavior change, and food/nutrition security.
  2. Serve as a Coordinator for the Nutrition and Dietetics Graduate Program Clerkship to manage contracts and affiliation agreements with internal and external sites, organize and track student placements, and facilitate communication, orientation, and evaluation processes for students and preceptors to support high-quality experiential learning.
  3. Publish peer-reviewed articles in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
  4. Initiate, build, and sustain a nationally recognized, innovative research agenda.
  5. Engage students in research and community-oriented activities relevant to the field.
  6. Work with students to plan and implement effective leadership development opportunities both in and outside of the classroom.
  7. Serve as an advisor or committee member for capstone projects, theses, and dissertations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Utilize a variety of assessment techniques to ensure achievement of student learning outcomes.
  2. Utilize a variety of instructional delivery methods, including online learning, social media, and portfolios, to provide educational content and opportunities supported by evidence-based research and individual expertise.
  3. Work collaboratively with the Department Chair, Associate Dean, Program Director, Program faculty, other academic units, CAUSES land-grant programs as well as with District of Columbia (DC) agencies and service providers.
  4. Perform student advisement, hold office hours, and perform course reviews with appropriate corrective/enhancement actions.
  5. Contribute to our land-grant mission through outreach and engagement with students, land-grant program staff, and key community stakeholders.

Minimum Job Requirements

  1. Doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DCN, DrPH, EdD) in Nutrition, Food Science, Health Science, Public Health, Organizational Leadership, or related area.
  2. Active status as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist credentialed by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  3. Licensure as a dietitian in the United States and the ability to obtain licensure in DC within one year of hire.
  4. Three years of professional practice experience in medical nutrition therapy, community/public health nutrition, and/or food systems.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated record of teaching, research, program planning, and problem-solving skills.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate
  • A record of scholarship and professional growth
  • At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor. (Community college experience preferred).Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  • An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract
  • At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.
  • Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent. When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.
