About the Department/College

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northern Arizona University prepares highly effective, culturally diverse speech, language, and hearing professionals to serve and advocate for individuals in their communities. We provide innovative, accessible, student-centered educational programs in an inclusive and caring environment.

We offer a Master of Science degree in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology through a competitive full-time or part-time (Summer Track) program. The Summer Track program includes cohorts of students at both the Flagstaff Mountain Campus and at the NAU Yuma campus. We also offer an undergraduate degree to prepare students for graduate work in speech-language pathology and audiology, as well as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant certificate program. In addition, the department operates the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at the Flagstaff Mountain campus where members of the community can receive services for a variety of communication and hearing disorders, and graduate students participate and learn. Graduate students participate in clinical practicum and externship experiences in a variety of different settings throughout the region, state, and nation.

Housed in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). The College of Health and Human Services is northern Arizona's hub for inclusive and equitable health and wellness education. With programs available in Flagstaff, and online, including the 30-acre Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) in the heart of Downtown Phoenix where NAU, UA, and ASU are co-located. The PBC offers more than six million square feet of research, academic, and clinical facilities for students earning advanced degrees in medical professions with access to cutting-edge technology. The urban environment presents numerous opportunities for interprofessional education with other NAU programs on campus including the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, the Master's in Physician Assistant Studies program, and the Master's of Athletic Training program. We prepare high-quality professionals to lend a healing hand. In addition to Communication Sciences and Disorders, CHHS has programs in Athletic Training, Dental Hygiene, Health Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies and Physical Therapy.

About the Position

This is a 9-month, clinical, non-tenure-eligible position beginning 8/17/2026.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) seeks qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Clinical Professor at the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. The individual in this role will serve as a clinical supervisor for the full-time Master's degree program in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology.

The successful candidate will supervise graduate students in their on-campus clinical practicum rotations, with potential opportunities for off-campus supervision, and will provide guidance on evaluation and treatment procedures as well as timely feedback on clinical performance, documentation, and professional conduct. Teaching responsibilities may include face-to-face and/or online instruction in the candidate's areas of expertise. Service activities will include participation on national, university, college, or department committees supporting accreditation, student success, and program operations. Scholarly engagement is negotiable.

Responsibilities Include

  • Facilitate the clinical and academic education of graduate students enrolled in the full-time Master's program in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Supervise and monitor students' clinical practicum experiences in accordance with ASHA standards for certification.
  • Teach face-to-face and/or online courses in areas of expertise as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, university, and ASHA requirements for clinical education.
  • Provide direct clinical supervision of student clinicians in the on-campus speech-language-hearing clinic, with potential for off-campus supervision.
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and profession.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain current clinical and supervisory skills.
  • Support the integration of evidence-based practice across clinical and instructional activities.
  • Evaluate, document, and support the development of students' clinical competencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an ASHA accredited program.
  • Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP).
  • Eligibility for Arizona licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist through the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS).
  • At least three years of experience post-CF as a practicing speech-language pathologist assessing and treating individuals with communication disorders.
  • Experience supervising SLP and/or SLPA student clinicians.
  • Completion of a minimum of two hours of professional development in clinical instruction/supervision, as required by ASHA for clinical supervisors.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse individuals and communities.

*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.*

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching face-to-face and/or online Communication Sciences and Disorders courses.
  • Five or more years of clinical experience as a practicing speech-language pathologist.
  • Experience supervising student clinicians within a university training program.
  • Proficiency using a learning management system (e.g., Canvas) and software platforms that support clinical education programs (e.g., Exxat).
  • Clinical experience working in medical settings (e.g., acute care, rehabilitation, skilled nursing) with evaluation and treatment of swallowing/feeding disorders, motor speech disorders, neurogenic communication disorders, or other medically oriented practice areas.
  • Eligibility for the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Speech-Language Pathologist, K-12 Certificate.
  • Experience with research or scholarly activities.
  • Experience with interprofessional education and collaboration in interprofessional teams in educational or medical settings.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

This position requires knowledge of contemporary speech-language pathology practices, clinical education models, and ASHA standards for certification and supervision. Strong supervisory, analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential for mentoring graduate clinicians and evaluating their professional growth. The role also requires the ability to integrate evidence-based practices, collaborate with interdisciplinary partners, and work effectively with diverse individuals using appropriate clinical and instructional technologies.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
