Assistant Clinical Professor
Position Duties
The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at Loyola University Maryland invites applications for a 12-month, on site, four-fifths (i.e., 30 hours per week) position as an Assistant Clinical Professor to serve as Externship Director (ED), beginning August 16, 2026. This position comes with an adjusted teaching load of two courses to accommodate the responsibilities of Externship Director who oversees a comprehensive externship program that supports the clinical training and professional development of graduate students in speech-language pathology.
As the primary coordinator of externship placements, the ED secures and maintains clinical partnerships to ensure that all students are placed in appropriate off-campus settings that meet program requirements and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification standards. Responsibilities include cultivating and maintaining relationships with clinical sites and preceptors, advising and preparing students for placement, and ensuring that placements align with student learning goals and program expectations.
The ED also provides oversight and support for students and preceptors throughout externship experiences. This includes maintaining regular communication, monitoring student performance and clinical hours, conducting evaluations, and addressing challenges that arise in placements. The ED evaluates the quality and effectiveness of externship sites and preceptors and uses data and feedback to support ongoing program improvement.
Additional responsibilities include ensuring compliance with accreditation, licensure, and university requirements; tracking student progress toward clinical competencies; and contributing to departmental reporting. As a member of the Graduate Director Team, the ED supports student assessment, recruitment, and program operations, and serves on departmental committees.
Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree or degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program;
- Current Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA);
- Eligibility for MD state licensure to practice speech-language pathology;
- Minimum of 3 years’ full-time (or its equivalent) clinical experience as a practicing speech-language pathologist;
- Completion of a minimum of 2 hours of professional development in the area of supervision/clinical instruction as noted in ASHA’s Professional Development Requirements for the 2020 Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards;
- Evidence of the knowledge and skills outlined by ASHA necessary for effective clinical supervision;
- Combination of leadership, administrative, and academic expertise to support the program's success;
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to contribute to the Jesuit educational mission of the department and university.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior successful academic or clinical teaching experience at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels;
- Prior clinical supervision experience;
- Familiarity with accreditation standards (e.g., CAA, ASHA) and clinical education best practices.
