ASSISTANT DEAN for Special Collections & Archives - LIBRARIAN III/IV (Ranked Faculty)

The UMKC University Libraries are seeking an experienced leader to serve as the Assistant Dean of Special Collections and Archives. This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track, ranked benefit-eligible faculty librarian appointment with supervisory responsibilities, reporting to the Dean of Libraries.

Primary Duties:

  • Provides leadership and vision for the Special Collections and Archives Division, supervising six library faculty and overseeing five departments with 11 additional full-time employees and student staff.
  • Promotes transparency, dialogue, and collaboration within the Division to meet library goals, develop policies, and manage programs.
  • Works with Division leadership, the Dean, and advancement representatives to develop donor relationships and seek external funding through grants.
  • Partners with the Associate Dean to ensure consistency of services across divisions and promotes a welcoming environment in accordance with university policies.
  • Participates in setting the Libraries' vision, mission, and strategic direction, and represents the Libraries in university initiatives.
  • Oversees acquisition, cataloging, metadata, preservation, digital projects, and community engagement for special collections.

Qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree with libraries/archives experience.
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in academic libraries, including work with rare books, manuscripts, cataloging, and digital collections.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory skills, project management, and commitment to a respectful workplace.
