Assistant Professor of Public History
This position expands a thriving public history program in which students can receive a B.A. in History with a Public History concentration, a M.A. degree in History with a concentration in Museum Studies, and a Ph.D. in U.S. history with a minor concentration in Public History. Applicants with demonstrated experience in historic preservation, material culture, digital history, community-engaged practice, and/or oral history are particularly encouraged to apply.
While this is a tenure-track position, an appointment made effective January 1, 2026, will be as visiting assistant professor (pre-tenure-track) for the spring semester, with the tenure-track appointment commencing effective August 1, 2026. The visiting appointment is necessary to effectuate a normal tenure clock. Candidate must hold or anticipate a Ph. D in History or related field by January 1, 2026.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public history and in the candidate’s area of specialization, both in person and online.
- Continuing an active program of peer-reviewed scholarship and/or creative activity.
- Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
- Providing service and leadership for our Public History programs and to the department, college, university and community.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should hold or anticipate holding a Ph.D in History or affiliated fields by January 1, 2026.
