COMPENSATION RANGE: 128,070.00 - 140,000.00 USD per year

Position Summary:

The Assistant Dean of Medical Student Academic and Career Success provides leadership for medical student academic support and career development at the University of Northern Colorado College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNC COM). The role oversees a team of learning and career specialists and partners with faculty and physician mentors to deliver academic coaching, learning support, career advising, and residency preparation services. Key responsibilities include guiding COMLEX and USMLE preparation, supporting students across pre-clinical and clinical phases, and contributing to student case management related to academic progress, professionalism, and conduct. The Assistant Dean advances programs and services that promote student learning, professional growth, and successful residency placement.

Job Duties:

Academic Success (70%)

  • Provide leadership in designing, implementing, and evaluating academic success initiatives that advance UNC COM's student support mission and transition to medical school.
  • Oversee academic coaching, tutoring, pre-matriculation programming, and drop-in support services, ensuring integrated and student-centered operations
  • Direct and develop learning and career specialists and tutoring program staff.
  • Assist in leading COMLEX and USMLE preparation programming in consultation with faculty, curriculum leadership, and academic support teams, including advising, resource planning, and monitoring performance.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to the UNC Disability Resource Center to support students through the accommodations process, ensuring compliance and timely access to services.
  • Partner with the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs and UNC academic success leaders to execute strategic retention and student progression initiatives.
  • Monitor academic performance and risk indicators across the curriculum; lead early-alert, academic intervention, and student follow-up processes, and maintain a small, high-need caseload of at-risk students.
  • Support coordination and execution of retention-focused programs, workshops, and initiatives that promote academic excellence and student progression.

Student Conduct, Concerns, and Administration (30%)

  • Participate in Student Progress Committee or equivalent student review processes to ensure consistent and mission-aligned decision-making.
  • Represent UNC COM Admissions and Student Affairs on institutional task forces, standing committees, and working groups.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate three learning and career specialists.
  • Co-supervise one mental health counselor in collaboration with UNC Counseling Center leadership.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate the COM associate director of career success.
  • Support case management processes for medical students experiencing academic, personal, behavioral, and wellness concerns, ensuring timely intervention, referral, and follow-up.
  • Adjudicate student conduct matters in accordance with UNC COM and University policies, partnering with the Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs and appropriate university offices to ensure fairness, transparency, and due process.
  • Monitor and track student professionalism concerns, conduct cases, and care referrals; maintain accurate and confidential case records.
  • Collaborate with UNC Main Campus, Dean of Students, Counseling Center, Disability Resource Center, and other campus partners to support student welfare and uphold institutional policy.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (EdD, PhD, MD/DO, PsyD, or other relevant terminal degree)
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, academic support, student success, medical education, or related higher education roles.
  • Experience providing academic advising, career advising, learning support, or student case management in a complex educational setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development, learning science, and evidence-based academic support practices.
  • Experience working with confidential student information and applying FERPA and institutional policies.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to work sensitively and effectively with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and campus partners.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8 plus years of relevant professional experience, preferably in medical education or comparable health-professions programs.
  • Experience developing and evaluating academic support or career advising programs for professional students.
  • Knowledge of residency advising, match processes, and medical student success frameworks (AAMC Careers in Medicine, NRMP, AACOM resources)
  • Experience leading or supporting student conduct or professionalism processes.
  • Previous experience overseeing COMLEX/USMLE preparation programming or supporting licensure-exam readiness.
