Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years of professional work experience within the recreation field (e.g. Campus Recreation, Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoors, etc.) or related health/wellness field
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Health Education, Sport Management, Higher Education, or related field
- Progressively responsible experience within campus recreation or a related field.
- Current CPR, AED, First Aid and or ability to obtain within 45 days
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supervising full time or graduate staff in a higher education setting.
- Master’s degree in Recreation, Exercise Science, Health Education, Sport Management, Higher Education, or related field
- Certified Group Fitness Instructor through a nationally accredited organization or ability to obtain within 45 days
- Certified Personal Trainer through a nationally accredited organization or ability to obtain within 45 days
- Additional certifications/specializations in fitness and wellness (Nutrition, Corrective Exercise, etc.)
- Active member in relevant professional organization such as NIRSA Leaders in Collegiate Recreation or fitness organizations
Job Description:
The Assistant Director of Fitness & Wellness along with the Coordinator of Fitness & Wellness will lead and manage the administration and operation of the Fitness & Wellness program, consisting of weight room operations, personal training, group exercise, and wellness programs, in the pursuit of inspiring Bobcats to be their best and create lasting memories.
Job Duties:
Program Management: 30%
- Develop and manage a diverse Fitness & Wellness program/facility including weight and fitness room operations, group fitness, personal training, and wellness programming
- Oversee daily operations of Fitness & Wellness program/facility including facility supervision, point of sale processes, website development and implementing operational policies and procedures.
- Implement innovative ideas that align with strategic plan and department priorities to improve overall operations and growth of programs/services/usage.
- Coordinate with marketing to develop various innovative promotional and outreach initiatives to increase awareness and engagement.
- Propose, market, and host fitness and wellness-focused special events twice per academic year.
- Develop and conduct assessments of program goals annually. Report assessment results to leadership as documentation of programmatic outcomes supporting department and division goals.
- Establish cooperative working relationships with campus partners to expand the reach of the Fitness & Wellness program
Staff Development and Oversight: 30%
- Oversee the development and performance evaluation of 1 Coordinator. Meet with full time staff regularly to discuss program goals, professional goals, and area updates.
- Manage the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation approximately 60 staff, including but limited, 15-20 student group fitness instructors, 10-15 student personal trainers, and 20-30 student weight room attendants
- Develop and oversee implementation of continuing education in-services for all Fitness & Wellness student staff
- Manage fieldwork and internship opportunities
Administration and Budget Development: 20%
- Lead annual budget development process
- Plan, prepare and manage program budget including overseeing income projections and monitoring income, expenses, and yearly comparisons
- Purchase equipment and supplies.
- Approve staff time and ensure compliance with payroll and purchasing processes
- Prepare, administer, and report semester and annual program evaluations and assessments
Risk Management and Safety: 10%
- Ensure staff compliance with industry standard safety and risk management practices, facility and equipment inspections, and existing Campus Recreation policies and procedures
- Assist with Department wide safety refreshers, drills and trainings
Other Duties: 10%
- Actively participate in departmental programs and projects designed to support the mission and goals of the university, division, and department.
- Serve on committees and task forces, as assigned.

- This position requires a flexible work schedule which at times will require frequent attendance during evenings and weekends. Additional hours may be required during peak periods.
