Department Summary

The Assistant Director of Residence Life provides oversight for a residential program consisting of 36 residence halls housing approximately 7,000 students. This position supports the day-to-day operations of Residence Life through supervision and development of professional staff, oversight of residential communities, crisis response leadership, student accountability processes, and cross-campus collaboration.

Serving on the Department of Housing and Residence Life leadership team, the Assistant Director advances departmental priorities and ensures a welcoming, safe, and developmentally supportive residential experience aligned with divisional and university goals. This position participates in a 24-hour, 365-day on-call rotation to respond to residential emergencies and campus crises.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Operational Leadership & Staff Supervision (60%)
    • Directly supervise, develop, and evaluate 4-5 full-time Resident Directors and 3-4 Graduate Assistants/Graduate Resident Directors; indirectly oversee approximately 40-80 student staff members.
    • Lead recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, and ongoing professional development for professional and student staff.
    • Oversee the day-to-day function of assigned staff and residence halls to support mission of the Department of Residence Life and Housing
    • Provide one-on-one supervision to Resident Directors
    • Facilitate weekly staff team meetings
    • Educate professional staff on the student staff evaluation and disciplinary process
    • Oversee hall and programming budgets for fiduciary responsibilities and compliance standards
    • Oversee the management of day-to-day operations and activities of assigned supervision area
    • Oversee the implementation of community development, integrated learning, student engagement and wellbeing initiatives for assigned supervision area
    • Provide direction to ensure staff build communities in support of the Department, Division, and University missions
    • Serve in departmental leadership meetings, providing strategic planning and decision making for the department in conjunction with other departmental leaders
    • Provide mentorship and guidance for Resident Directors and Graduate Assistants/Resident Directors to promote growth, development and advancement.
    • Serve on the Residence Life On-Call Rotation to provide support and guidance to staff during crises and emergencies
  2. Campus Collaboration & Student Accountability (15%)
    • Develop relationships with campus partners that have a direct impact on the residential experiences (ie. Athletics, Honors, ROTC etc.)
    • Provide oversight and support for residential student conduct cases, including serving as a hearing officer for high level cases
    • Serve as a liaison with campus partners such as Residential Custodial Services, Maintenance, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility and OUPD to improve and strengthen relationships and shape policies and student expectations/experiences as outlined in duty and incident responses, the Housing Handbook, Student Code of Conduct and compliance with law.
  3. Functional Area Leadership (15%)
    • Chair or Co-Chair for Departmental committees or Teams
    • Provide vision and direction for assigned functional area and identify strategies to integrate into the day-to-day expectations
    • Responsible for the overall coordination of events and activities in support of engagement, community development, integrated learning, or wellbeing initiatives
    • Facilitate meetings and discussions as appropriate with assigned staff in support of departmental functional area priorities.
  4. Provide support to university, division and departmental efforts.
    • Support university, divisional and departmental missions, visions, goals and strategic plans.
    • Comply with all university, divisional and departmental policies, practices and expectations.
    • Attend, prepare and participate in trainings, staff meetings, committees and other meetings as assigned.
    • Represent Housing and Residence Life through committee involvement and participation, report out at staff meetings and provide updates to Director of Residence Life.
    • Actively participate in departmental student and professional staff recruitment and selection activities
    • Participate in the coordination of move-in and move-out

Position Profile

Responsible for the direction of residence hall operations for students. May administer off-campus housing programs.

Responsible for managing team or department budgets and resources.

Addresses departmental or cross-team issues, devises long-term solutions.

Independence of Action

Acts independently, with consultation with senior management.

Communication and Collaboration

Facilitates communication among team and higher-level leadership, builds relationships across University.

Physical Requirements

This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related field, 5 or more years of related professional experience, and 3 or more years of supervisory experience, or equivalent education and experience.
