Stanford Athletics is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition, and Coordinator of Medical Nutrition Therapy to work effectively with Sports Performance and Sports Medicine to provide a comprehensive approach to Student Athlete's health and performance. The position will provide nutrition counseling and medical nutrition therapy to individual student-athletes, teams, and coaches; as well as nutrition focused performance assessment on both an individual and team basis. Additional responsibilities will include oversight and coordination of a student workforce to maintain the central and satellite fueling stations; review, provision and distribution of nutritional supplements to individual student-athletes and teams; as well as coordination of staff/program professional development opportunities. The position will report directly to the Assistant Athletics Director, Sports Nutrition, have a heavy emphasis in football, and serve as the team lead for assigned olympic teams.

Responsibilities include

  • Provide medical nutrition therapy to individual athletes which may include:
    • Individualized pre and post operative nutrition counseling.
    • Assessment of individual athlete blood chemistries to address vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
    • Nutrition and supplementation strategies to address acute performance issues (cramping, nausea, dehydration, etc.).
  • Coordinate with Team Physicians, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Sports Performance Coaches to assess the nutritional needs of athletes as it pertains to the return to play process.
  • Coordinate with Team Physicians, Physical Therapists, Athletic Trainers, and Sports Performance coaches to provide nutritional support to improve athlete well-being and health.
  • Collaborate with Team Physicians and clinic staff to address athlete vitamin/mineral deficiencies and distribute appropriate supplementation.
  • Coordinate yearly team performance labs with medical clinic staff.
  • Create nutrition focused performance tracking strategies to assess the effectiveness of performance nutrition and MNT interventions.
  • Assess athlete body composition via BodPod (when appropriate) and communicate results in a suitable and effective manner.
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling, performance nutrition education, and informative educational materials to teams.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate student employees/fueling station aides and maintain day to day oversight of the fueling station.
  • Assist with continuing education and professional development of staff and student employees.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of sports nutrition policies and procedures.
  • Integrate point of service nutrition education to athletes fueling station experience.
  • Maintain knowledge of special diets, allergies, and intolerances, and communicate this information with the sports medicine team and student athletes to allow them to meet unique needs to compete at the highest level.
  • Provide periodic but consistent presence at team practices, games, and other scheduled events.

To be successful in this position, you will have

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in nutritional science, dietetics, or related field and one to three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Current Dietetic Registration and maintain continuing education requirements established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in sports nutrition, including experience in the collegiate or professional setting.
  • Proficiency in use of EMR systems to assess and communicate athlete PHI in a safe, effective manner.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines as it relates to communication of student-athlete health status regarding sport participation.
  • Knowledge of NSF/Informed Sport Supplements, protocols, and appropriate applications.
  • Stay up to date on the latest in peer-reviewed research as it pertains to athletic performance, performance nutrition, and medical nutrition therapy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of blood panels and proper nutritional intervention.
  • Experience working with a High Performance Team. Specifically, experience coordinated athlete care with Team Physicians, Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and Sports Performance Coaches.
  • Bring strong time management, oral, and written communication skills to the team.
  • Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
  • Ability to work non-standard work hours or workweek (may include early morning, nights, weekends, or holidays).
  • Have an ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Be highly motivated to work as part of our growing sports nutrition team.
  • Knowledge of NCAA and ACC Conference rules and regulations.

Preferred qualifications include

  • Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or actively pursuing.
  • Master's degree in nutritional science, exercise science, or health-related field.
  • Experience in a clinical sports medicine setting.

The expected pay range for this position is $86,387-$95,000 per annum.
