Job Summary

The Assistant/Associate Learning Designer is a member of a team that partners with Gies faculty to design in-person, online, and hybrid delivery of high-quality learning experiences. The Assistant/Associate Learning Designer is knowledgeable of learning and cognitive science, as well as assessment and learning experience. Responsible for directing and facilitating ideation and exploration of effective learning activities and assessments, following a course development plan that aligns with college quality expectations and standards for online courses, instructional team expertise and teaching preferences, guiding the design of effective learning objectives in alignment with program goals and assurance of learning efforts, and ensuring that all activities associated with new and redesigned content production and active course offerings in the portfolio provide a "best in class" experience for instructors, staff, and students.

Assistant Learning Designer also: Supports a portfolio of courses in various stages of development and offerings, including new and in-development courses, and active or inactive courses. Collaborates with key stakeholders in the course development process under the guidance and supervision of a Senior Learning Designer.

Associate Learning Designer also: Manages a portfolio of courses in various stages of development and offerings, including new and in-development courses, and active or inactive courses. Collaborates with key stakeholders in the course development process, following established guidelines, standards, and documented procedures with supervision from a Senior Learning Designer.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assistant Learning Designer

Course maintenance and targeted updates
  • Perform term-based course maintenance and updates in consultation with faculty members and subject matter experts, applying evidence-based pedagogy and accessibility practices while following documented procedures.
  • Facilitate the targeted enhancement of courses, including adjustments to assessments, learning materials, and course settings in consultation with faculty members and subject matter experts and in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Assist and support in the documentation and resolution of support requests from students, faculty, and staff as needed during course design and delivery.
  • Apply project management skills and best practices to coordinate updates and reviews of courses in advance of each term launch.
  • Collect, document, and review student feedback, instructor feedback, program data, and other data analytics to inform recommendations on upcoming course revisions and enhancements.
Faculty training and consultations
  • Provide evidence-based pedagogical and accessibility guidance to faculty and staff in alignment with instructional design theories, universal design principles, and practical guidance on teaching and learning innovations.
  • Research use data to make recommendations on educational best practices, instructional resources, and instructional technologies.
  • Consult with faculty on effective use of learning management systems, instructional technologies, multimedia tools, and approved software platforms to enhance teaching and learning; advocate for evidence-based adoption to improve learner engagement and outcomes.
  • Develop and curate guides, resources, and support documentation to aid faculty in the design and delivery of their courses, helping build up the repository of articles in the Teaching & Learning unit's knowledge base.
Course development and redesign
  • Support, in consultation with faculty members, subject matter experts, and Teaching & Learning staff and in accordance with documented procedures, the design of new course offerings. Apply evidence-based pedagogical and accessibility practices to develop learning outcomes, assessment strategies, media scripts, and learning activities in consultation with faculty and subject matter experts and in accordance with documented procedures.
  • Support, in consultation with faculty members, subject matter experts, Teaching & Learning staff and in accordance with documented procedures, the redesign of existing courses, including substantial revisions to course media or assessments.
  • Prototype and build instructional materials in appropriate formats using the unit's approved learning management systems, platforms, technologies, and standards.
  • Apply project management skills and best practices to facilitate course development and redesign projects on a schedule that follows established quality standards.
  • Plan and follow course development timelines and effectively communicate expectations to faculty members and members of the project team.
  • Collaborate with other Teaching & Learning staff - including learning designers, accessibility specialists, digital media professionals, course support staff, and student employees - to conduct tasks associated with course design, development, and delivery.
  • Facilitate course development meetings, capture key insights and action items, and produce detailed reports to inform instructional design decisions and project planning.
Strategic projects and initiatives
  • Facilitate and contribute to Teaching & Learning unit and Learning Design sub-unit projects and initiatives in support of the unit's strategic plan.
  • Serve on standing and/or special committees tasked with administrative functions, new staff hires, and ongoing initiatives for the Teaching & Learning unit.
  • Apply best practices to inform improvements to internal documentation and development of workflows.
  • Apply project management skills and best practices to facilitate a collaborative and productive environment with stakeholders on strategic project teams and committees.
  • Contribute to innovation initiatives piloting new technologies, pedagogical strategies, support models, and operational workflows, documenting and sharing findings with the T&L unit.

Associate Learning Designer

Minimum Qualifications - Assistant and Associate

A. Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy AND Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching OR

B. Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities AND Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

Preferred Qualifications - Assistant and Associate

Education: Bachelor's/Master's degree from an accredited institution in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, instructional systems, education, or a closely related field

Preferred Qualifications - Assistant

Experience: Experience with instructional design, technology for teaching, and/or teaching

Preferred Qualification - Associate

Experience: Two years of work experience in the field of course development by the time of hire. Evidence of professional growth and/or contributions within the field of instructional design, technology-aided learning, learning science (i.e., education, neuroscience, educational psychology, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Assistant and Associate

A successful candidate will have: knowledge of assessment and learning activity design, knowledge of pedagogy and learning science, organizational skills, ability to participate in a team, ability to participate in large, complex projects, ability to apply standards and follow documented procedures, ability to communicate and build relationships

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3289 - Instructional Development Specialist position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after search close date. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary for the Assistant Learning Designer position is $61,900 to $63,900 and for the Associate Learning Designer is $67,800 to $69,800.

This position is not eligible for any type of sponsorship for work authorization.

Remote work options may be available for this position; however, must be available to be onsite at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus based on operational needs.
