About the Department

Welcome! The Department of Life and Earth Sciences (LES) at Perimeter College encompasses coursework in biology, environmental science, geology, and integrated sciences. Academic pathways in Biology and Geology are available through the department, but LES courses also support other academic interests, such as chemistry, environmental science, and education.

The Life and Earth Sciences faculty is recognized for its excellence in teaching and also for its engagement in the community and professional organizations. LES also offers undergraduate research opportunities. Life & Earth Science faculty members hold memberships in professional scientific organizations, such as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT), the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) and Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL). Faculty members are current or past officers in the Georgia Academy of Science and its disciplinary sections and participate as judges for K-12 Science Fairs in the metro Atlanta school districts.

These initiatives and efforts support service to the community and promote pathways for study and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.

Position Description

Perimeter College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position in Biology. This is a teaching-focused position: 80% of the workload is instruction, with service and scholarly and creative activity accounting for 10% each. Perimeter faculty are responsible for providing 27-32 credit hours of instruction per academic year and engaging in service to the department, college, and university. Perimeter College faculty maintain a campus presence, and the successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to early undergraduate teaching and learning, and the ability to thrive in a highly diverse academic setting. Perimeter College is a multi-campus access institution, and the teaching assignment may be on any of the college’s campuses.

Required Education

Assistant professor:
A Ph.D. in the teaching field is required by the time of the appointment.
Salary range: $60,000 – $65,000

Associate professor:
A Ph.D. in the teaching discipline is required, and must have previously held the associate professor rank at a comparable institution for a minimum of one academic year. Salary Range: Commensurate with experience.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • College teaching experience. One year is preferred and can include experience as a teaching assistant at a college or university.
  • Experience teaching online asynchronous and/or synchronous and proficiency using a distance learning platform.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in high-impact educational practices, scholarship of teaching and learning, building college-to-career linkages, and/or other pedagogical initiatives that enhance student success.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in scholarship in the discipline and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to teach effectively using a variety of methods with a demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology.
  • Ability to create a sense of belonging for a varied student population and facilitate student learning in both the in-person and virtual learning environments.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational and computer skills (able to maintain appropriate records).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to achieve discipline, department, or college goals.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duty

Tenure-track positions are academic year (August-May) appointments, with an 80% teaching, 10% service, and 10% Scholarly & Creative Activity workload distribution.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing 27-32 semester hours of instruction per academic year
  • Providing student support and advising
  • Maintaining weekly office hours
  • Working effectively and professionally with students and colleagues

Expectations also include service to the department, college, and university as well as maintaining a campus presence.
