Assistant Professor, Architecture (History and Theory)

Essential Job Duties:

The School of Architecture is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the history of architecture and urbanism. The role will offer opportunities to teach core lecture courses in architectural and urban history, advanced seminars aligned with the candidate's area of expertise in history, theory, and criticism, and potentially architectural design studios, across the curriculum in undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. programs. Applicants should demonstrate both experience and potential for future development in scholarly activities and teaching. All faculty are expected to support the operations of the school, college, and/or university through service on committees, certificate and concentration programs, or other leadership roles.

The successful candidate will have identified a clear area of expertise and a research agenda evidenced through publications and/or other forms of peer-to-peer or public dissemination. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in the history of architecture, urbanism, the built environment, or a closely related field. Candidates should preferably have experience in teaching surveys and seminars that utilize global frameworks, critical methods, and interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations.

In addition, the ideal candidate will be expected to:

  • Prepare students to be successful in academic and professional settings by helping them to develop critical thinking and design skills.
  • Advance the School of Architecture's research enterprise in topics that are critical to contemporary and future practice.
  • Engage professional practice and industry partners in North Carolina and/or beyond.
  • Seek collaborators within and across departments and colleges in the university.

Essential duties include:

  • Teach 18 credits per year (typically one 6-credit studio and one 3-credit course per semester in the School of Architecture programs).
  • Develop and maintain an active and significant research record.
  • Serve on school, college and university committees and task forces.

Minimum Experience/Education:

  • Terminal Master's Degree in Architecture

Required Qualifications:

  • Grounded in contemporary design concepts, principles, practices, methods, and tools across a range of media.
  • Able to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through research, creative, and scholarly activities, teaching, and service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional practice experience; teaching experience; post-professional degree, including a Ph.D. or Doctor degree.
  • Professional licensure in Architecture.
