Position Overview

The Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position. This role is intended for scholars working in the history and theory of architecture and related fields, and aligns with the Schools commitment to critical, historical, and theoretical inquiry as a core component of architectural education.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in architectural history and theory, as well as research seminars and other courses aligned with their expertise. In addition, the candidate will be expected to engage collaboratively with faculty and students and contribute to the intellectual life of the School.

All teaching activities are conducted in person on the Universitys main campus in Columbus, Ohio.

The Ohio State University will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position.

Performance Objectives

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the history and theory of architecture, including lecture courses, seminars, and other courses aligned with the candidates expertise.
  • Develop course content and assignments that support student learning outcomes and contribute to a rigorous culture of critical inquiry in the curriculum.
  • Advise and mentor students through office hours, critiques, and other forms of academic support, as appropriate to assigned teaching responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in service to the Architecture Section, including participation in reviews, committees, and other activities that support curricular and academic priorities, as appropriate for a visiting appointment.
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the School by participating in lectures, seminars, workshops, and other academic events, and by supporting the planning and delivery of public programming when opportunities arise.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • PhD in architectural history, architectural theory, or a closely related field; candidates who are ABD at the time of application will also be considered.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to or demonstrated efforts in scholarly activities that reflect Ohio States Shared Values

Located in the award-winning Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects-designed building on The Ohio State Universitys Columbus Campus, the Knowlton School fosters a singular environment for innovative design research and critical inquiry within its three sections: architecture, landscape architecture, and city and regional planning. As part of the College of Engineering, the Knowlton School enjoys the benefits of a large research institution including collaborative relationships with departments in engineering, design, ecology, history, as well as the Wexner Center for the Arts. The schools ongoing catalogue of special programs includes the Baumer Visiting Professorship, the LeFevre Emerging Practitioner Fellowship, a lecture series, gallery exhibitions, and the Source Books series. Architecture has approximately 420 students, 19 full-time and 15 auxiliary faculty members.
