Teaching 40%

  • Teach applied cello lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses

Research/Creative Activity – 40%

  • Establish a research/creative agenda pursuant of artistic growth and an expanding reputation of excellence
  • Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University

Service - 20%

  • Work individually and collaboratively in recruiting music performance, music education, and music therapy students
  • Work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University
  • Serve on graduate and faculty committees

Required Qualifications

  1. Doctoral degree in music by the start of appointment.
  2. Demonstrated record of productive teaching excellence at the collegiate or equivalent level.
  3. Documented success as a cello artist/performer, as evidenced in application materials.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Position Overview

The University of Kansas School of Music is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor - Artist - Teacher of Cello. This position will teach applied cello lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses; build and maintain a strong cello studio; work individually and collaboratively in recruiting music performance, music education, and music therapy students; supervise/mentor teaching assistants; work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University, including service on graduate and faculty committees; establish a research/creative agenda pursuant of artistic growth and an expanding reputation of excellence; and participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.

The University of Kansas School of Music is a comprehensive university music school offering professional training in a wide array of specializations through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs.   5. 1-2 page statement discussing personal teaching philosophy within a comprehensive university school of music, including objectives and the means of achieving those objectives.
  6. Internet links to recent performances and teaching examples. The performance recordings should be approximately 30 minutes in total length and contain at least 15 minutes of live video recordings. The teaching videos should demonstrate the instructional capabilities of the applicant.
