Position Overview
Primary Purpose of Position
The tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Geotechnical Engineering must have expertise in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering within the broader context of civil infrastructure. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: foundation engineering, earth structures, soil-structure interaction, ground improvement, geotechnical aspects of sustainability and resilience, and emerging technologies in geotechnical practice.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in geotechnical engineering.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in geotechnical engineering and related areas.
- Advise and mentor students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Contribute to departmental, college, and professional service activities.

The College of Engineering, with over 2,800 students, has ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Architectural, Bio-, Biological, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering, as well as in Computer Science. On the Graduate level, the College has 8 Masters of Science Degree programs, and 5 Doctoral programs. The 5 research cluster areas of the College of Engineering ( COE ) are Autonomous Systems, Cybersecurity and Resilience, Energy and Sustainability, Healthcare Applications and Complex Systems and Networks. Within COE, the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering ( CAEE ) oversees BS and MS programs in Civil and Architectural Engineering. The department includes 14 full‑time faculty, 6 part‑time faculty, and 3 staff members. The department has a current enrollment of over 375 undergraduate students, 25 graduate students. The faculty in the department conducts research in areas critical to civil infrastructure, sustainable building systems, and environmental resilience. Faculty expertise includes structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation systems, water resources, and building energy efficiency, with projects addressing challenges such as climate impacts, advanced materials, and intelligent building technologies. Research is supported by funding from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, Department of Transportation, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and industry partners, fostering innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Minimum Requirements
- A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, with a focus on geotechnical engineering
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in research and teaching
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- Professional engineering licensure (or eligibility) in the United States.
- Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration and ability to engage with industry partners.
- Experience or interest in addressing sustainability, resilience, and innovative solutions in geotechnical engineering.
