Job Summary

Job Summary/Basic Function: All full-time faculty teach assigned classes established by the SLCC Full Time Faculty Handbook for Compensation and Workload and the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility and Tenure Policy in a manner that reflects the mission and values of Salt Lake Community College. Tenured and tenure-track faculty participate in teaching, professional activities, and college service.

Under general supervision, the Assistant Professor will prepare and teach fundamental chemistry courses and labs. Faculty member may be assigned to any SLCC location, be required to teach online courses, and may be an assigned alternative work schedule.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrate a depth of understanding in the field as well as the ability to teach courses and labs in chemistry. Effectively prepare and teach assigned courses according to current best practices in student learning for chemistry.
  • Attend and participate in new faculty orientations and ongoing training as required.
  • Comply with all college employee policies and procedure including the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility, and Tenure policy
  • Comply with FERPA policy and other pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Serve on Department, Division, School, and/or College committees as needed to assist in policy development, curriculum development, procedures, or other matters that benefit the Department, Division, School, or College.
  • Pursue professional development activities and research that maintain personal expertise, contribute to teaching efforts, student success, and department interests.
  • Demonstrate and support professional commitment to Department, Division, School, and College mission and values.
  • Maintain a supportive attitude toward work, students, colleagues, and administration.
  • Maintain timely communication with students and hold regularly scheduled office/consultation hours.
  • Maintain professional communication etiquette with students.
  • Actively assess student learning including administering student surveys in classes, analyzing student performance records, and other assessment methods as prescribed by Division procedures, including departmental discussion and reviews with the Associate Dean.
  • Develop, revise, distribute and adhere to current course outlines, laboratory projects, instructional materials, and/or syllabi to keep in alignment with transfer institutions, and collaborate with the department on shared chemistry curriculum.
  • Participate in curriculum development and textbook selection and in maintaining curriculum (content and pedagogy) to meet standards of transfer institutions and other accreditation.
  • Integrate accessible technology into courses including instructional delivery in online and other formats as they become available and useful to students.
  • As directed, work with the Chemistry Department Coordinator to communicate with counterparts at other USHE institutions in Majors meetings, PAC meetings, as necessary to maintain relationships, articulation agreements, and seamless transfer for SLCC students.
  • Participate in department recruitment/retention efforts including advising potential and current students about the specific discipline.
  • Attend, and participate in, required meetings and events, including Convocation, Commencement, SLCC 360, and department meetings.
  • Promote the mission, vision, values, and goals of the College through inclusive teaching, professional activity, and service.
  • Stay current in field and maintain necessary credentials, professional skills, and teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  • Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and college committee assignments and departmental and college need.
  • Mentor and provide formative feedback to adjunct faculty.
  • Serve community partners as content area experts as appropriate.
  • Other activities as needed for the department, school, or institution.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Highly successful background teaching introductory chemistry courses.
  • Experience with curriculum development
  • Experience with designing and implementing laboratory activities.
  • Evidence of successful participation in college and department activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

Master's degree in chemistry or closely related field

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Chemistry

Compensation Information

  • Base salary is for a 9-month Academic Year appointment and paid over 12 months.
  • Additional compensation may be available for overload teaching.
  • Summer Semester compensation is 23.5% of base for a full teaching load.
  • Salary placement is based on credentials, experience, teaching effectiveness, competencies, and internal equity.
  • Compensation practices align with SLCC policy and support equitable placement.

  • Finalist must complete a teaching demonstration and submit recommendation letters.
