Assistant Professor, Department of Biblical and Religious Studies

Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for an Assistant Professor tenure track position in the Department of Biblical and Religious Studies within the Howard College of Arts and Sciences. The department intends to make two hires at this position. This will be a tenure-track, 9-month, full-time faculty appointment to begin in August 2026.

Qualified candidates will hold an earned Ph.D. (from an accredited institution or equivalent) in either Old Testament/Hebrew Bible or New Testament (or a closely related field) as well as have demonstrated effective teaching and scholarship appropriate for the level of appointment. Evidence of teaching excellence as well as evidence of scholarly productivity through publication is highly desirable. ABD applicants will also be considered. An established track record of service to the church through either teaching or preaching is also highly desirable. Candidates must affirm the Baptist Faith and Message of 1963 in accordance with Samford Faculty Handbook Policy A5.1. As minor matters of disagreement and differences related to denominational specificity are acceptable, candidates should contact the department chair with any questions and/or clarifications regarding this matter (Membership in a Baptist church is not a requirement of this position). Candidates must also be committed to promoting the study of biblical, theological, and religious studies as a central academic pursuit in the university and as valuable to the intellectual, vocational, and spiritual maturation of students. The successful candidate will normally teach multiple sections of the University’s required Biblical Foundations courses each year, as well as upper-level Bible courses in the candidate’s primary discipline. Because the candidate will be teaching introductory Bible courses, previous experience teaching such courses is highly desirable. The course load is twelve hours per semester. Duties also include mentoring and advising students as well as service to the department, college, and university.
