West Virginia University School of Medicine - Health Professions located in Morgantown, WV, is seeking a full-time, non-tenure track (12-month) Assistant Professor, Director of Research for the Department of Human Performance, Division of Athletic Training to contribute to a well-established program with a tradition of excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.

The Director of Research, in collaboration with the Division Chair, will lead and advance the research efforts within the Division of Athletic Training. The Director of Research will be responsible for teaching in the MSAT program, leading Division research initiatives, and contributing to the mission of WVU through service in department, university, or professional activities. Successful candidates will also be required to facilitate research collaborations with faculty in the Division of Athletic Training along with researchers and clinicians in the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, WVU Sports Medicine, School of Medicine Health Professions and Undergraduate Programs, Department of Orthopedics, Department of Emergency Medicine, and the Morgantown community. The Director of Research will also be responsible for developing and maintaining a robust student research program that includes integration of graduate and undergraduate students across the School of Medicines Health Professions and facilitate grant funding opportunities for faculty in the Division of Athletic Training.

Responsibilities of the Director of Research for the MSAT program include, but are not limited to:

  • Contributing to the education of students in the athletic training program (courses such as: Musculoskeletal Evaluation, Therapeutic Interventions, and Optimizing Athletic Performance
  • Assist Director of Clinical Education, Program Director, and Division Chairperson with curriculum/program revision and development
  • Serve a key role in recruitment and retention in coordination with other core faculty.
  • Mentor students through research opportunities at the local, regional, and national levels
  • Develop a scholarly agenda that enhances visibility of the MSAT program on the regional and national levels
  • Disseminate scholarly work resulting in noteworthy impact on the athletic training profession by completing publications in professional referred journals and scholarly presentations
  • Develop clinical scholars following evidence-based clinical practice that fosters skill development, mentorship, and clinical application of research inquiries.

The ideal candidate will have previous clinical practice in athletic training, experience as an educator in a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) program, and a sustained record of research that supports established and emerging areas.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  • Hold a post-professional doctoral degree awarded by an institution accredited by the United States Department of Education in the field of study within athletic training or a related field, such as exercise science or biomechanics.
  • At least one (1) year of self-directed research programming development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Contemporary expertise in athletic training.
  • Certification and good standing with the Board of Certification.
  • NPI number with appropriate health care field designation.
  • Must hold current athletic training licensure in West Virginia or be eligible for licensure.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of clinical supervision and/or teaching in a CAATE accredited Athletic Training Program.
  • Service to the profession with state, district, and national committees.
  • Record of a clear scholarly focus with the potential to attract external funding.
  • Experience in using biomechanical equipment and patient reported outcomes (Motion capture. Isokinetic - Biodex, force plate, EMG, and IMUs) for evaluation and return to play protocol testing.

All qualifications must be met by the time of the appointment.

This position may be a tenure track or non-tenure track, depending on the qualifications and research expectations of the candidate. Faculty members in the Division of Athletic Training are afforded a differential workload allowing for customization of expectations based on research expertise, clinical/teaching expertise, and service obligations. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
