Assistant Professor, Education: Literacy (Special Appointment)

The Education Department at Curry College invites applications for a full-time Special Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor for the 2026-2027 academic year to teach courses in literacy and other subjects as faculty expertise warrants, to lead an evaluation of our program's language acquisition and literacy curriculum, and participate in a DESE review of literacy curriculum and outcomes.

The successful candidate will be an engaging educator and collaborative colleague specializing in evidence-based literacy education grounded in the science of reading. This individual must be knowledgeable about state and national education standards, along with relevant DESE curriculum frameworks and regulatory processes, to ensure successful outcomes for students and the continued approval of the program.

We seek a scholar-educator who actively connects theory and practice in the classroom, understands and applies current and best practices to pedagogy, and can advance the field of preparing new educators. The successful candidate will bring a current understanding of pedagogical best practices to their teaching, scholarship, and service, possess a knowledge of early education/elementary/middle school education, and value mentoring young educators through their coursework and practicum experiences.

Candidates are expected to be an active contributor to the service of the department and to content areas in the department, depending on their area(s) of expertise. Doctoral degree preferred; minimum qualification is a Master's degree with demonstrated progress towards a doctoral degree. Evaluations of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities include the following:

• Teaching courses in foundational reading and writing pedagogy with strategies based on recent literacy research;
• Collaborate with leadership team on evaluation of our program's language acquisition and literacy curriculum, and participate in a DESE review of literacy curriculum and outcomes;
• Teach courses in curriculum, introduction to the field of education, educational psychology, assessment, and school/family relationships depending on the expertise of the applicant;
• Advise and mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate level;
• Engage in service to the department in programming and curricular development, admissions and recruitment efforts, and other department initiatives;
• Support ongoing data collection and analysis to productively participate in program review and accreditation for undergraduate and graduate programming;
• Pursue a program of scholarly inquiry, including, but not limited to, presentations at conferences and publications in scholarly journals;
• Be technologically proficient teaching in on-line and hybrid/hi-flex environments and using LMS systems.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master's with preferred doctorate degree, or demonstrated progress towards doctoral degree;
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience teaching language acquisition and literacy courses at the college level;
• Demonstrated knowledge of DESE standards, processes, and requirements;
• Minimum of 5 years teaching and/or administrative experience in educational settings from Pre-Kindergarten through middle school;
• Demonstrated expertise in curriculum & pedagogy at the early education/elementary/middle school level;
• 1-3 years' experience teaching courses at the college level;
• Professional work style conducive to an active and professional environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3-5 years' experience teaching courses at the college level;
• Successful experiences in educator preparation programs in a traditional higher education setting or other appropriate administrative role;
• Experience teaching/working in culturally, academically and economically diverse settings;
• Commitment to recruiting and teaching diverse learners and modeling inclusive practices;
• Experience teaching/working within a specific content area that complements the needs of the department (for example: social studies, school-family-community relations, special education, teaching English to speakers of other languages, or science education.

Salary:

Starting at $80,066 annually
