Position Description
The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor nine-month faculty position in the area of Environmental Geochemistry.
All aspects of Environmental Geochemistry and Biogeochemistry will be considered, and innovative development or application of novel biogeochemical theories and insights into earth surface processes of societal interest are encouraged. Areas of interest include the carbon and nitrogen cycle, soil processes, other elemental cycles, and land/atmosphere interactions. The position will contribute to the biophysical sciences core of ESPM, which explores the maintenance and enhancement of our climate, terrestrial ecosystems, and agricultural landscapes in a changing world. Candidates whose research also addresses climate solutions are encouraged to apply.
The University of California, Berkeley, and ESPM are uniquely situated as a location to study terrestrial environmental geochemical problems. The campus, and its affiliation with the adjacent Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, offers unparalleled intellectual and instrumental resources, and supports a vibrant community of scientists engaged in complementary research. The campus manages multiple natural field reserves, agricultural research stations and forests for research purposes. ESPM is devoted to a strong physical science framework that explores processes of planetary and societal relevance.
ESPM is a multidisciplinary department of faculty and cooperative extension specialists from the biological, physical, chemical, and social sciences and the humanities who conduct research, teaching, and outreach to advance scientific understanding and develop solutions for the world's pressing environmental problems. ESPM is home to a top ranked Ph.D. program in environmental science, and our undergraduate students have a choice of vibrant majors that span the disciplines in the department. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values.
ESPM embraces open and equitable access to opportunities for learning and development as our obligation and goal. An inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy are essential to address critical environmental challenges - including climate change, food security, natural resource access and management, biodiversity, environmental health, land use decision-making, and sustainable, just living conditions - and to create impactful solutions. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values.
The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
