Assistant Professor in Computer Engineering

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), University of Manitoba, invites applications for two full-time tenure-track positions in Computer Engineering, both at the Assistant Professor rank. Candidates are sought with expertise in the fields of Embedded Systems, Computer Systems and Hardware, and for at least one of the positions the candidate should have complementary expertise in electronics/sensors. The successful applicant should be able to take up the position by July 1, 2026. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify aspects of their identity that position them to bring currently under-represented viewpoints, expertise and forms of excellence to this role.

The successful applicants must hold an earned Ph.D. in a field relevant to the areas of interest specified below, and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba. Applicants must have a demonstrated record of research success, and the potential for developing an impactful externally funded research program which will provide an inclusive and equity-based environment for the supervision of a diverse group of graduate students.

The search committee will be particularly interested to review applications that demonstrate research plans that will develop fundamental work eligible for funding from the major relevant Canadian agencies such as NSERC. The research statement is expected to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following sub-fields: Embedded Systems or Computer Systems and Hardware, and associated sensors/electronics. Applicants will demonstrate their ability or potential for high quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, proficiency in oral and written communication, and the ability to engage with a diverse audience. It is expected that the successful applicant will be able to teach courses at the undergraduate level within Electrical and Computer Engineering, taking their share of teaching in the core of our programs. In particular, the search committee will be most interested to review applications that demonstrate expertise and interest in teaching in one or more of: Embedded Systems; Computer Systems and Hardware; Electronics.

At the graduate level, the successful applicant will be expected to supervise students and teach graduate courses within the ECE Department that is home to approximately 200 graduate students pursuing either the Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree. Our graduate students are a diverse group that already meets the Engineers Canada “30 by 30” target and is the largest research graduate student community found within a single department at the University of Manitoba. This vibrant research community incorporates strong connections to companies ranging from start-ups to major corporations across multiple sectors. As a member of our departmental community, the successful applicant will engage in professional service and outreach activities within the profession and in the wider community.

Our Department offers two accredited undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Commensurate with national trends, we are currently experiencing an expansion of student interest in Computer Engineering and anticipate that this will continue. Combined, this community represents over 500 undergraduate students and is expanding in concordance with the resources associated with a recent gift. Committed to pedagogical excellence, the two programs share a capstone design course that encourages projects with high levels of interdisciplinarity, and are frequently student-initiated and/or conducted in collaboration with local industry. A significant proportion of our students engage in extracurricular design team activities spanning a wide range of interests and international competitions, and take advantage of our Co-operative Education / Industry Internship Program that provides placement opportunities locally, nationally and internationally.

Currently, the ECE Department has 34 academic staff, and over 40 postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars and adjunct professors. Included in these are three Canada Research Chairs as well as a number of prominent researchers who have achieved recognition as NSERC Industrial Research Chairs, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada, and University Distinguished Professorships. The scholarly vision of the department is supported by 17 technical and administrative staff. We maintain substantially-funded research activities with strong connections across our campus and to other institutions. These are complemented by collaborations with industrial partners and government research laboratories. Additional information on the Department can be found at our website (umanitoba.ca/ece). Applicants may also find the new Strategic Research Plan of the University a useful snapshot of the breadth of ambition at the University of Manitoba (umanitoba.ca/strategic-plan).

The successful applicant will bring a fresh pedagogical vision to the Department and a vision for an innovative portfolio of research that will leverage our resources and collaborative strengths. The search committee will be keen to hear how applicants have taken up opportunities in their career to advance principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (EDIA), as well as promoting academic integrity. The University of Manitoba hosts the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (nctr.ca) and has an institution-wide strategic commitment to Truth and Reconciliation as articulated in the TRC Calls to Action. The successful candidate is encouraged to articulate how they will strengthen our shared commitment to meaningful progress in these important societal challenges.
