Summary: Opening of a recruitment procedure for an Assistant Professor position in the subject area of Linguistics.
In accordance with Article 39 of the University Teaching Career Statute (ECDU), approved by Decree-Law no. 448/79, of 13 November, in its current wording, the Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, Professor Alexandra Curvelo, acting by delegation of powers in the terms specified in paragraph b) of no. 1 of Order no. 13828/2025, of 20 November, published in Diário da República, is hereby made known that an international documentary recruitment procedure is open for a period of 30 working days, counting from the day immediately following the publication of this Notice in the Diário da República, for the recruitment of one position of Assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities of NOVA University Lisbon, for the development of teaching and research activities in the disciplinary field of Linguistics, namely in the domain of Text and Discourse Linguistics. The teaching and research activities will be carried out within the Department of Linguistics, in articulation with the Research Unit CLUNL. This position may be funded under the 2nd edition of the FCT-Tenure Programme.
The opening of a vacancy for this position as well as the appointment of the Selection Committee were authorized by an Order of Doctor Paulo Pereira, Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, on the 29 May 2026.
This is an international application procedure based on merit and follows the provisions of Articles 37 et seq. of the above-mentioned Statute and of NOVA University Lisbon’s Regulation for University Teaching Career Applications, published in an annex to Order no. 3012/2015, of 20 February, published in Diário da República, 2nd series, number 58, of 24 March.
I – Admission requirements:
- In accordance with article 41-A of the ECDU, holding a PhD degree is a requirement for applying to this notice.
- The candidates must hold a PhD degree in Linguistics; candidates who hold a PhD in other fields but have a research background in linguistics may also apply.
- The candidates must master spoken and written Portuguese or English.
II – Submission of applications:
- Applications must be submitted exclusively via the electronic platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt/ by selecting the relevant application procedure (procedure code: DOCAUX-NOVAFCSH-26-2) before the deadline specified in this Notice.
- Applications must be formalized, under penalty of exclusion, with the supporting documents listed below. All the required documents should preferably be submitted in PDF format. Short names for files are recommended. Links are not accepted as substitutes for these same documents.
- a) Document proving the fulfilment of the legal requirements demanded in paragraphs 1 and 2 of point I;
- b) Sworn statement declaring the mastering of Portuguese or English at a teaching level;
- c) Candidates of foreign nationality, except those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must submit, at the time of application, a sworn declaration undertaking to demonstrate, within one year after the signing of a possible contract, a level of proficiency in Portuguese (written and spoken) that allows the assignment of teaching duties without any communication limitations in Portuguese with students;
- d) Curriculum vitae of the candidate, indicating the works carried out and published, as well as the activities performed regarding all the functions and responsibilities of university teachers mentioned in Articles 4 and 5 of the ECDU. The curriculum vitae must be organized in accordance with point III of this Public Notice, under penalty of exclusion.
- e) Copies of three works mentioned in the curriculum vitae which the candidate considers to be the most representative of their academic trajectory.
- f) Scientific and pedagogical development project that the candidate proposes to implement in the future (up to 4000 words).

- Documents proving compliance with the general requirements for public service recruitment may be replaced by a declaration made in the form available on the electronic platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt.
- Applications duly accompanied by the above-mentioned documents must be submitted within 30 business days, counting from the day immediately after the publication of this Public Notice in Diário da República.
- The supporting documents of the application must be written in Portuguese or in English.
III – Criteria, indicators and ponderation factors for the evaluation and ranking of the candidates:
1 – Scientific Component of the curriculum vitae (55%):
- 1.1 – Scientific publications (namely books, articles in indexed scientific journals, and book chapters), with the candidate required to select three publications (article, book chapter or book) that they consider most representative of their academic achievements (0–40);
- 1.2 – Coordination or co-coordination of scientific projects funded through competitive international calls organised by national or international scientific agencies and/or individual scientific projects undertaken after the PhD that have been funded through competitive international calls organised by national or international scientific agencies (0–10);
- 1.3 – Papers presented at scientific conferences and colloquia and other relevant scientific activities with significant international reach (0–5).
2 - Teaching Component (25%):
- 2.1 – Documented teaching experience in the field of the present procedure, or in advanced technical/scientific training (0–5);
- 2.2 – Submission of syllabuses, lesson plans and other teaching materials for two relevant curricular units, within the subject area and the scope of the competition (0–15);
- 2.3 – Supervision of students in non-teaching components of PhD and Master’s programmes or supervision and mentoring of internships (0–5);
3 – Scientific and pedagogical development project, up to 4,000 words (15%):
- 3.1 – Contribution to the fulfilment of the institution’s mission, particularly with regard to the development of teaching in the subject area and the field covered by the competition, including the international dimension (0–6);
- 3.2 – Contribution to the fulfilment of the institution’s mission, particularly with regard to the development of research in the subject area and the field of the competition, including the international dimension (0–6);
- 3.3 – Contribution to the fulfilment of the institution’s mission, particularly with regard to securing competitive funding (0–3).
4 – Other relevant activities (5%):
- 4.1 – University extension activities and/or transmission of knowledge to society (0-2);
- 4.2 – Complementary training activities and/or relevant professional experience in the area of the call (0-3).

V – Evaluation of Applications:
- After the deadline for applications, the Selection Committee shall meet to evaluate and rank the candidates.
- Based on the assessment of the curricula vitae, their suitability to the scientific area for which the procedure is open, the remaining application documents, and the classifications awarded in accordance with the criteria, indicators and weighting factors set out above, the Selection Committee shall admit candidates whose final classification, in terms of absolute merit, is equal to or higher than 50, and exclude those whose final classification is below 50.
- Candidates who are not admitted shall be notified to comment thereon, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
- Once the admitted candidates have been determined, based on the classifications referred to above, the Selection Committee issues a written report justifying the ranking of the admitted candidates.
- The ranking of the admitted candidates shall be determined by vote of the members of the Selection Committee, respecting the order presented in the document referred to in the previous paragraph, in accordance with subparagraphs a) to f) of paragraph 11 of Article 16 of NOVA University Lisbon’s Regulation for Recruitment in the University Teaching Career.
VI - The notification of admitted and excluded candidates shall be sent by email through the electronic platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt/, pursuant to subparagraph c) of paragraph 1 and subparagraph b) of paragraph 2 of Article 112 of the Code of Administrative Procedure.
VII — The competition file may be consulted by candidates, upon request, by means of an application addressed to the Chairperson of the Jury, submitted through the electronic platform https://apply.fcsh.unl.pt/.
VIII – If the PhD degree of the selected candidate has been conferred by a foreign university, its recognition shall follow the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16th August. The candidates must fulfil all formal obligations established in that diploma until the date of the signature of the contract, under penalty of exclusion.
