Description

Stony Brook University's Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in computational and physical sciences. This is a joint hire with an appropriate home department at Stony Brook University. The anticipated start date is Fall 2026.

Applicants should have a strong record of research in scientific computing, including high performance computing (HPC), as well as expertise in one or more additional areas of computational science, such as, but not limited to, computer architectures, algorithms, quantum computing, machine learning and/or AI. IACS faculty are expected to develop rigorous and interdisciplinary programs that strengthen both their home department and IACS. While the role of computation-such as modeling, simulation, and large-scale data analysis-is not domain-specific, it will be central to the research agenda of the successful applicant as a primary scientific, scholarly, or creative methodology that advances both the physical sciences and the intellectual and algorithmic foundations of computation.

The successful candidate is expected to pursue interdisciplinary research in collaboration with IACS-affiliated departments, which span the sciences and the humanities, and research areas such as human-centered computing, climate, and molecular discovery. The candidate will leverage Stony Brook University's high-performance computing resources and engage in close collaboration with researchers across IACS and the University's newly established AI Institute. Teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students are expected, along with contributions to promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity within the academic community.

This is a tenure-track position with an initial three-year renewable appointment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a STEM field, in hand no later than August 31, 2026. Candidates should have a proven track record of research, demonstrated by a strong publication record in computational and physical sciences, along with a compelling vision for future research. Candidates should also demonstrate an ability to attract external research funding. A strong commitment to teaching is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Candidates with experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses, as well as those working within multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary environments, are highly desirable. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to open-source software and practices. Applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable laboratory or research environments and advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives at the institutional level will receive special consideration. A strong record of attracting external research funding is preferred.
