Within this setting, the School of Human Ecology is a dynamic and growth-oriented applied research unit with over 17 faculty and staff. We serve over 700 undergraduate majors enrolled in four unique, specialized disciplines: Interior Architecture and Design, Human Development and Family Science, Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design, and Recreation and Tourism Management. Each program focuses on human behavior and experience with a shared mission to enhance quality of life.
Whether exploring the multifaceted aspects of human development and family science, delving into the nuances of interior design, unleashing creative potential in fashion merchandising and apparel design, or navigating the outdoors in recreation and tourism management, each program offers comprehensive, evidence-based learning. Our approach emphasizes impactful research and creative activity, hands-on learning experiences that bring theory to practice, and a supportive, mentoring environment for students and faculty. We maintain an active undergraduate research program and demonstrate a passion for community and global engagement. We also house the Child Development Center, an on-campus laboratory serving 64 children that provides student training opportunities and supports faculty research.
The Interior Architecture and Design program is CIDA (Council for Interior Design Accreditation) and the university is NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) accredited and serves 300+ undergraduate students. The program's facilities include dedicated studios with Wacom drafting stations and rendering computers, a VR room, lighting booth/lab, printing lab, and material resource room, along with strong connections to community partners, industry professionals, and alumni. Current faculty expertise includes healthcare design, architecture, landscape design, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. This new position will expand our research and teaching expertise to increase our regional and global impact.
Job Summary
Reporting to the School of Human Ecology Chair, the Assistant Professor of Interior Architecture and Design position requires undergraduate teaching, developing and sustaining a productive program of scholarship, and providing service to the School, college, and university, as well as engaging in student success initiatives and professional development. The position is an academic (10 month) tenure-track appointment.
Required Qualifications
- Earned PhD in Interior Design, Architecture, or a closely related field by August 1, 2026, with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Interior Design or Architecture
- NCIDQ certification or eligibility.
- Ability to teach a range of studio and lecture courses, e.g. a senior capstone studio course and codes.
- Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Documentation of research resulting in scholarly publications.
- Dedication to evidence-based, human-centered design.
- Engagement with the interior design profession and/or experience with related professional practice.
- Documented teaching excellence.
- Experienced with community engagement initiatives.
- Knowledge of interior design-related computer programs, e.g. Revit, CAD, Adobe Creative Cloud, 3DS Max, 20/20, CED Designer, Enscape, virtual reality/augmented reality.
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience.
This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
