Job Details

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology invites applications for a position in Sociology at the rank of non-Tenure Track Assistant Professor to begin August 2026. Sociology and Anthropology is a combined major at HPU.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • A Ph.D. in Anthropology, Sociology, or a closely related discipline is required for the position.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate level
  • Positive teaching evaluations that also reflect enthusiastic and innovative instruction
  • An active research agenda with evidence of research potential and/or productivity
  • A strong desire to engage in collaborative research with undergraduates
  • A willingness to potentially teach an Intellectual Discovery Seminar on a topic of the candidate’s choice.
  • An ability to teach quantitative methods in upper-level classes.

The teaching load is three-three, 4 credit hour courses in the fall and spring semesters and will typically include at least one section of Introduction to Sociology or Anthropology. We are especially interested in candidates whose primary area of specialization is in medicine and health; however, other specializations will be considered. Secondary areas of interest are open, but there are preferences for candidates who can teach courses on societal organization or media analysis. Promotion is possible; it would be connected to research and annual reviews.

Candidates should consult the High Point University Undergraduate Bulletin to see what sociology/anthropology courses are offered that they would feel qualified to teach, or are interested in teaching, and address that in their cover letter.

Review of applications will begin April 2, 2026, and continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should attach the following in one single document:

  • A letter of application
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copies of graduate transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable for now)
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and research interests
  • Contact information for three references.
  • Candidates with teaching experience should also include course syllabi and teaching evaluations.

Candidates from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. References will be requested for all finalists.
