Assistant Professor of Art

The Department of Art and Art History at Kalamazoo invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art from artists whose studio practice is based in painting, printmaking, and/or intermedia. Teaching responsibilities include six courses per year (two per trimester) with regular offerings in drawing, painting, printmaking, digital media, and interdisciplinary courses, as well as supervision of senior projects in these areas. This position starts in September 2026 and is one of five tenure lines in the Department of Art and Art History at Kalamazoo College including three core studio lines based in Painting/Print/Intermedia, Ceramics/Sculpture, and Photo/Digital. Art and Art History faculty also participate in academic advising of students, oversee equipment/studio needs in their areas, and work closely with one another to sustain dynamic curricula based on contemporary approaches to traditional media. All faculty at the college engage in governance at departmental and college levels.

The successful applicant will also demonstrate a strong commitment to working with students, faculty, and staff from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. We are especially interested in artists whose studio practice and/or teaching include the ability to design courses that can count towards our college’s majors, minors, and concentrations in: environmental studies; media studies, critical theory, Critical Ethnic Studies; and Women, Gender and Sexuality studies.

Applicants for this position are required to have an MFA in studio art and an active studio practice in at least one area of painting/printmaking/intermedia with significant undergraduate/graduate coursework or professional experience in traditional printmaking practices due to the technical and safety demands of running a printshop. It is preferred that the successful applicant will also have full-time college-level teaching experience, a strong exhibition record, and evidence of ongoing engagement with their discipline(s).
