The Department of Communication, Criminal Justice, and Sociology at Carroll University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Communication at the Assistant Professor rank, beginning Fall 2026. This tenure track position is a retirement replacement and will be teaching oriented (80% teaching / 20% service). Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Communication, Strategic Communication, Journalism or a related field.
  • The candidate must have a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a documented record of excellence in teaching, a passion for teaching first-year students, and the ability to engage under-represented students in the study of Communication.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have an interest and/or experience in teaching some combination of the following areas: crisis communication, rhetorical criticism, media writing and reporting, social media, research methods, media literacy, communication law, and communication technology.
  • Additionally, an interest in sports communication or health communication will align well with foci at the university.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary teaching responsibilities will likely include rhetorical criticism and some combination of the courses above. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to teach a section or more of introduction to communication and/or intercultural communication.
  • Faculty are responsible for advising students and supervising their advisees' internships.
  • Teaching opportunities in the University's general education curriculum are possible.
  • Additional responsibilities may include advising, curriculum development, course coordination, and other service to the Communication program and the University.

Rank and Salary:

  • Assistant Professor (80% teaching / 20% service).
  • This position is eligible for tenure.
  • Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.

The Department:

  • The Communication Program has three faculty members and is housed within the Department of Communication, Criminal Justice, and Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • The program supports approximately 40 undergraduate Communication majors and 20 minors across the Communication minor and Social Media minor.
  • Faculty in the department are active in mentoring senior student research, leading study abroad programs, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and coordinating internships.
  • The program is responsible for staffing and assessing a new university-wide requirement in public speaking and/or group communication.

The University:

  • Founded in 1846, Carroll University is an independent, co-educational comprehensive institution grounded in the liberal arts tradition.
  • The Pioneer Core general education curriculum has a strong emphasis on developing intercultural awareness.
  • Carroll offers graduate programs in several Health Science fields as well as in Business, Software Engineering, and Education.
  • Carroll University is in suburban Waukesha, 16 miles west of Milwaukee and 60 miles east of Madison.
  • The University serves approximately 3000 full-time and 500 part-time students.
  • The University, though intentionally ecumenical and non-sectarian in approach, is related to the Presbyterian Church, USA.
