The University of Texas Permian Basin's Department of Social Sciences welcomes applications for an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Social Sciences. The person hired will start mid-August of 2024.
Salary Range
$65,000.00 depending on qualifications
Essential Functions
The person hired will be one of 11 full-time faculty in the Department. This person:
- Will teach a mix of online and face to face courses. Teach some of the following: Introduction to Criminal Justice, Theories of Criminal Behavior, Criminal Justice Administration, Corrections in America, Research Methods, Quantitative Analysis, Juvenile Delinquency, Homeland Security, Probation and Parole, Application Practices in Criminal Justice, and other criminal justice courses that are of interest to the students and the hired faculty member. In addition, must be able to teach general education courses in these areas, sociology and/or political science. May be given the opportunity to teach an upper level course in these areas.
- Will be considered for the position of Coordinator of the Undergraduate CCJS program and possibly of the Graduate CJAD program.
- Expect to pursue an active research agenda. The basic standard for achieving tenure is publishing at least three articles in legitimate peer reviewed journals. Faculty must be the lead author in at least two of these articles and may be the second author in one of these articles. Must be achieved by the end of the fifth year as an assistant professor at UTPB. In addition, an assistant professor is expected to produce at least one other academic product per year (e.g., paper presentation at an academic conference).
- Provide academic advising to students
- Provide support to students in need of academic improvement
- Engage in some service to the university, college, and department (assistant professors are expected to provide service at a level significantly greater than that expected of lecturers).
- Actively participate in the Department's expansion
- Perform other reasonable assignments as needed for the advancement of the CCJS and CJAD programs.
Required Qualifications
- Doctorate in criminal justice, criminology, or other related field
- Experience in online and/or face to face university teaching in criminal justice
- At least three years of working with criminal justice, law enforcement, courts, corrections, or other closely related areas. This can involve teaching of criminal justice courses at an accredited university, direct service provision, training, and/or successful applied research/evaluation efforts in the areas mentioned in the previous sentence.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in both online and face to face university teaching in criminal justice as well in sociology and/or political science.
- Willingness to relocate to the Permian Basin area
- One or more paper presentations at an academic conference (e.g., American Society for Public Administration Annual National Conference) in the past five years
- First or second author in one or more articles in legitimate peer-reviewed journal(s) over the past five years
- Securing of one or more grants of $5,000 or more (internal or external) for applied research or curriculum development purposes in the past five years.
- Significant administrative experience in a university setting.
Additional Information
From the Department: The Department consists of five program area majors: Undergraduate Political Science (PLSC), Undergraduate Criminology and Criminal Justice Services (CCJS), Master of Criminal Justice Administration (CJAD), Master of Public Administration (MPAL), and Undergraduate Sociology (SOCI). The Department also includes an economist who oversees course offerings in Economics (ECON). Department faculty sometimes undertake interdisciplinary efforts involving faculty within the Department and/or with others outside the Department. Schedule
Generally, the normal work hours for the university are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 5:30 pm; Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm with a one-hour lunch. The individual holding this position may need to be available early morning, evening, and on weekends to meet the needs of the department. Faculty hours may differ based on class schedule and department need.
Standard Working Conditions
- Able to lift various materials up to 25 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Able to bend, crouch, and reach continuously.
- Physically able remain seated, frequently to continuously.
- Able to remain standing up to 15% of the time.
- Possesses dexterity abilities required to perform job duties including extensive keyboard work, operating office equipment, performing filing, and other job-related responsibilities that include extensive wrist and hand movement.
