Job Summary

The Department of Political Science at Gettysburg College invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Politics at the assistant professor rank beginning in August 2026. The department seeks candidates in the subfield of American Politics specializing in judicial politics, law, and/or courts. The successful candidate will teach an introductory course in American Politics and upper-level courses in their specialty. The successful candidate should have a commitment to teaching and advising in the liberal arts tradition. The department has a strong history of pre-law advising at the College, a responsibility that is available to interested faculty with expertise in judicial politics. The teaching load for this position is the equivalent of five courses (typically 2-3 or 3-2) over the academic year.

Gettysburg College is a highly selective liberal arts college located within 90 minutes of the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. Established in 1832, the College has a rich history and is situated on a 220-acre campus with an enrollment of over 2,200 students.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in Political Science or closely related field with a specialization in judicial politics, law, and/or courts. Teaching experience or promise of excellence in teaching is desirable. We strongly encourage applications from candidates who can demonstrate through their teaching, scholarship, and/or governance that they can contribute to the inclusivity of our community.

Special Instructions to Applicants

Applicants should complete the online application. A cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research program, and statement of teaching goals in a liberal arts context should be submitted. As part of the teaching statement, we ask applicants to specify the courses that they would be prepared to teach, and we also ask applicants to elaborate on their experiences and plans for building an inclusive learning environment. Applicants should include the names and email addresses of three professional references, at least one of whom can speak to the applicant's teaching effectiveness. After the applicant completes the online application, the professional references indicated will be contacted by Gettysburg College via email to submit letters of recommendation electronically. Review of applications will begin on September 19, 2025 and will continue until a successful candidate is found. Inquiries can be addressed to Professor Lindsay Reid at lreid@gettysburg.edu.
