Job Summary
The Department of Political Science at the University of Texas at Tyler invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor in the subfield of political theory to begin August 2026.
We are a growing and vibrant department embarking on a new direction with a Politics, Philosophy, and Law (PPL) focus. Our PPL program emphasizes public service and equips students with critical skills in politics, ethics, law, and philosophy. The PPL program provides our students an integrated view of politics emphasizing links between theory, philosophy, and practice. UT Tyler PPL students must complement classroom experiences in methodology, politics, philosophy, and law and a capstone cooperative off campus learning component. We are seeking a new colleague who shares our enthusiasm for this approach to teaching and learning about politics, service, and public affairs.
Specifically, we are seeking a scholar who is focused on political theory, texts, and themes in political thought such as the founding of the United States and comparative constitutional principles. We seek a scholar who will work with our PPL students to explore and understand the underlying theories, ideologies, and principles that inform political thought and guide political choices and policymaking.
While most political theorists are trained in departments of politics and political science, we also welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in political theory who are trained in other disciplines or in interdisciplinary approaches. Duties will include teaching two courses (graduate and undergraduate) in the Classical Foundations of Political Theory. All faculty are expected to regularly teach an introductory course that serves our majors/minors as well as the general education requirements of the college's core curriculum. This position offers an opportunity to join a growing and academically vibrant community and to make significant contributions to teaching, research, and service.
