Salary range: The current salary range for this position is $80,800-$128,700 (9-month academic year salary), however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Position Description

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Physical Climate Science.

Globally, changes in temperature and rainfall patterns contribute to important feedbacks between changing climate dynamics and the biota and result in strong nonlinearities in the earth system's response to human action. Understanding such complex dynamics requires research in the physics of climate change, its underlying drivers, and interactions with the Earth system.

We encourage applications from candidates whose research contributes to understanding climate change in the earth system through the use of models, data analyses, and/or theoretical approaches. Areas of physical climatology and climate change of interest include (but are not limited to), atmospheric science, environmental climatology, hydrometeorology, microclimatology, and earth system science. Candidates whose research also addresses climate solutions are encouraged to apply.

ESPM is a multidisciplinary community of scholars from the physical, biological, and social sciences and humanities who conduct research, teaching, and outreach to advance scientific understanding and develop solutions for the world's pressing environmental problems. ESPM is home to a top-ranked Ph.D. program in environmental science, policy and management, and to five vibrant majors that span the disciplines in the department.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Applicants for this position must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) granting program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications: The ideal candidate will:

• Demonstrate strong process-based research skills and conduct research that contributes to an integrated understanding of regional and/or global climate change in the earth system through climate models, data analyses, and/or theoretical approaches.
• Show the potential to establish an innovative and internationally recognized research agenda, to communicate their work effectively to a broader public, and to work with other researchers from diverse disciplines.
• Exhibit interest and ability to conduct robust, process-based, basic and/or applied, computational or empirical studies.
• Provide evidence of strong research productivity, potential for funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs.
• Demonstrate the ability to support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy.
