Position Overview

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education at Winston-Salem State University seeks to fill a nine-month, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position with a start date of August 2026. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring students inside and outside the classroom, engaging in scholarly activities that leads to publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline, facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences, and engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams.

We invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biopsychology, Cognition/Cognitive Development, Neuropsychology, or Neuroscience. The ideal candidate should possess a doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a closely related field and demonstrate a track record of research and teaching in cognitive/cultural neuroscience. We are particularly interested in candidates who use innovative neuroimaging techniques, computational methods, and/or novel experimental designs to investigate the neural basis of cognitive processes among underserved populations. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in brain and behavior, cognition/cognitive development, cognitive/cultural neuroscience, and other foundational, breadth, and depth courses as required. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to conduct and publish high-quality research, secure extramural funding, and mentor students inside and outside the classroom. We seek exceptional candidates who are highly committed to effective teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. The candidates should demonstrate an ability to engage with undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and utilize various technologies to engage students in the learning and mentoring processes. As a teacher and scholar, the candidates must be able to publish in peer-reviewed journals that are relevant to the discipline. We desire candidates who meet the following requirements.

  • Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited four-year institution of higher education; ABD will be considered if a successful defense occurs before the August 2026 start date.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to liberal education and equity in a diverse educational community and illustrate a commitment to their professional growth and development via engagement in professional organizations and conferences.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with colleagues to enhance the department’s curricular and co-curricular programs.
  • Candidates must be able to work on interdisciplinary teams to procure extramural funding.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching collaborations with professional colleagues at the university, across universities, or within the broader public.
  • Candidates must possess effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Candidates must be willing/able to engage in academic advising and mentor students in high-impact learning practices (HIPs) such as undergraduate research.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

We desire candidates who illustrate evidence of situating students in and mentoring them through undergraduate research experiences or who have experience engaging students in HIPs such as study abroad, internship opportunities, or community service learning where they must leverage their content knowledge to benefit the larger community.

  • Candidates with a biopsychology, cognition/cognitive development, or cognitive/cultural neuroscience background are preferred.
  • Candidates should demonstrate an ability to teach writing and research methodology courses.
  • Candidates also should be committed to their professional development and demonstrate tenacity toward obtaining external funding to enhance the department’s research, teaching, and service goals.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

Describe the specific job duties related to this competency

Teach up to 12 hours per semester, advise/mentor psychology majors, participate in departmental reviews, engage in curriculum development, conduct publishable scholarly research, and perform other regular departmental and university duties.
