Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Leadership and Counseling in the College of Education is inviting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in School Counseling. The department develops caring and ethical educational leaders and professional counselors through co-constructed teaching and learning experiences, respectful service and community engagement, and intentional research and inquiry to promote equity. We prepare courageous leaders and mental health practitioners to assume prominent roles in effecting positive change with clients, students, families, and communities in local and global contexts. The department offers three CACREP-accredited master’s degree programs in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling, and college counseling and student affairs, in addition to Doctoral and Masters’ programs in Educational Leadership, K-12, and Higher Education & Student Affairs. These programs are committed to developing professional counselors who actively promote the well-being of individuals, institutions, and communities through the application of knowledge and skills enhancing the diversity, dignity, and development of the clients and communities they serve. We operate a Counseling Training Clinic that is open to the community as well as a School-Based Counseling Clinic that serves several schools in the local community.

Our mission as a Counseling Program is to prepare graduates to work as professional counselors in higher education, K-12 school, and clinical mental health settings, using multiple modalities with diverse students and clients presenting with a range of concerns including addressing mental and emotional disorders. We seek to foster helping professionals who intentionally create inclusive spaces of responsiveness, respect, and appreciation for all forms of diversity, developing cultural proficiency in the service of promoting mental health and wellness to benefit local and global communities.

Position

Assistant Professor of School Counseling, Department of Leadership & Counseling at Eastern Michigan University.

General Summary

The Counseling Program is seeking applicants for a tenure-track faculty position with specialization in School Counseling to begin in August 2026. This is a tenure-track position requiring in-person, on-site engagement in teaching, service, and professional activities on campus.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach and advise graduate students in the CACREP-accredited counseling programs, including teaching courses specific to school counseling.
  • Engage in scholarship and professional, community, and university service activities.

Required Qualifications

  • At a minimum, candidates must have earned a doctorate by August 2026 in Counseling/Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited program or have experience teaching as a full-time faculty member in a CACREP program sufficient to be considered core faculty.
  • Strong background and interest in school counseling practice who value leadership, advocacy, and systemic change in P-12 settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion, and preparing counselors from marginalized populations.
  • An established research agenda.
  • Identification with the counseling profession, as evidenced by professional memberships and leadership activities.
  • Eligibility for licensure as a professional counselor in Michigan and the capacity to meet the requirements for a Michigan School Counselor License or National Certified School Counselor via NBCC.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in designing and implementing curriculum in socioemotional learning or college and career readiness, clinical supervision, understanding of trauma-informed education, and evidence of collaboration across disciplines.
  • Expertise in school restorative justice practices, special education and neurodiversity, and/or educational technology.

A competitive salary will be based on qualifications and prior experience with a tenure-track appointment at the assistant professor rank. Eastern Michigan University will consider up to two years of credit for service at another institution. This is an eight-month appointment with summer employment contingent on departmental need. The starting date should be no later than August 15, 2026.
