This is a joint post 65% Sociology, 35% HPS.
The Departments of Sociology and History and Philosophy of Science are looking to recruit an Assistant Professor in the Social Studies of Medicine in a new joint post starting on 1 September 2026. The role holder will research the social studies of medicine and teach on the popular interdisciplinary Masters in Health, Medicine and Society. The role will begin on 1 September 2026.
We are looking for someone with a strong background in the area of sociology relating to medicine, who can demonstrate both breadth and depth of experience. The ideal candidate should have a proven upwards trajectory and an established or developing international reputation that would make them a leader in the field. They will also demonstrate the ability to undertake postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and supervision. The candidate will demonstrate an ability to support the teaching quality of the MPhil in Health, Medicine and Society; contributing to examining, assessment and admissions; and contribute fully to academic administration.
Application requirements include:
- An application letter outlining how your skills and experience meet the person specification (3 pages maximum)
- A Curriculum Vitae (C.V.), to include date of PhD and details of any career gaps if applicable (4 pages maximum)
- A list of research publications (2 pages maximum) together with pdfs of up to two items (journals or book chapters) that you would like to highlight as writing samples.
- Completion of the online cover form with contact details of three referees who can be contacted before interview.
Interviews will take place in Cambridge over two days in February and will include a presentation on your research and a teaching presentation to academic members of both departments.
The position is based in the Department of Sociology and the Department of History and Philosophy of Science which are both on the same short road in central Cambridge, England.
