The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for several Assistant Professor positions in the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in digital pathology and/or image processing and analysis, and ideally will also have either clinical training or research experience in Pathology. Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree in the areas of computer science/engineering, mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or other relevant quantitative disciplines.

Teaching responsibilities may include instructing and overseeing medical and graduate students, post-doctoral students, residents and fellows.

Clinical responsibilities may include service in laboratory medicine or anatomic pathology, depending on clinical training, but are not required.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include the development of an independent research program in the area of image analysis/machine learning as applied to digital histopathology images. Opportunities for collaborative work using radiologic images and EHR via partnership with the Center for Biomedical Image Computing and Analytics (CBICA), Center For AI And Data Science For Integrated Diagnostics (AI2D), Department of Radiology, and Institute of Biomedical Informatics are also available. The position will play an important role in guiding the design of the informatics infrastructure for generating, storing, linking, and analyzing large amounts of digital pathology imagery together with rich EHR, genetic, omic and diagnostic data using advanced data science and AI approaches. The position will work closely with the executive vice chair, vice chair of research, and the vice chair of digital and computational pathology to promote synergy between research and clinical operations in the department in the area of digital pathology and application of artificial intelligence in general.
