Job Duties:

The Department of Computer Science in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in any area(s) of computer science, beginning August 2026.

This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in our computer science programs and potentially in our cybersecurity programs and a future artificial intelligence program; research; and service to the university, community, and profession. Research and teaching expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.

Job Details:

The successful candidate will be able to teach core computer science courses such as programming, data structures, and theory of algorithms. In addition, the successful candidate will have expertise to teach courses in one or more other subfields offered by the department, including artificial intelligence, software engineering, cloud computing, computer systems, or data science. These courses support our department’s Computer Science B.S and M.S. programs, as well as our Cybersecurity B.S. and M.S. programs and a new artificial intelligence program that is under development.

The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate and graduate students; results in publications; and contributes to advancing the department, university, profession, and society. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to participate in service activities and to embrace the principles of diversity and inclusion as a member of the university community.

Responsibilities:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include teaching a variety of courses and supervising graduate capstone projects or thesis research, depending on the candidate's interests and experience as well as the department's needs. Standard teaching load in the department is 12 credits per semester; research grants or other external funding may be used to reduce this teaching load, subject to department and college approval. Faculty at UW-Whitewater may be required to teach in a variety of formats, including in-person, online, and/or hybrid formats, or courses in the evenings.

Department Information:

The Department of Computer Science (https://www.uww.edu/cls/departments/computer-science) is housed in the College of Letters and Sciences (https://www.uww.edu/cls). With focus areas in cybersecurity and in artificial intelligence, the department supports more than 400 undergraduate majors in computer science and cybersecurity, as well as over 150 undergraduate minors in computer science, cybersecurity, data science, bioinformatics, and website development and administration. Graduate programs supported by the department include Master of Science programs in Computer Science (on-campus and online) and in Cybersecurity (online). The department fosters a collegial relationship among faculty and staff, who provide students with hands-on learning opportunities and actively engage in research and education grants funded by agencies such as the the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, and the U.S. Department of Labor.

Research expectations include publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or conference proceedings, along with grant writing. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage undergraduate and graduate students in research or other scholarly and creative activities.

Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. All students, faculty, and staff are required to ensure their materials are digitally accessible and utilize standard technology platforms supported by UW-Whitewater. Examples include, but are not limited to, Navigate, Canvas, and Microsoft Office applications – including Outlook, which is essential for university email communications and scheduling.

Compensation:

Well-qualified candidates can expect a minimum starting salary of $80,000 commensurate with the candidate's education, related experience, and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, or a closely related area is required. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2026; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2027 in advance of their first scheduled review.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate and graduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with inclusive populations, and willingness to serve as an active member of the university community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of successful teaching experience and/or professional development in teaching, especially in teaching undergraduate students and/or in teaching fully online.
  • Software development, artificial intelligence, or data science work experience in industry, government, or military settings.
  • Ability to involve undergraduate and graduate students in research.
  • Interest in introducing or developing activities that will broaden the participation of students from underrepresented groups in computing.
  • Grant writing experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
