Assistant Sailing Coach
Chief Objective of Position
Responsible for assisting in all aspects of establishing and maintaining a successful Intercollegiate Sailing program and providing specialized expertise in their area of concentration.
Work Tasks
- Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student athletes at Christopher Newport University; evaluate individual performances. Assist in on-water and classroom instruction and coaching in Sailing techniques and strategy of the Christopher Newport University Sailing team.
- Assist and provide support with planning, organizing, and coaching within the Christopher Newport University Sailing program.
- Participate in the collection and analysis of tactical and statistical data of opponents; assist in designing game plans and strategies; film analysis. Analyze performance of the Sailing team and adjust strategies as needed.
- Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters; consults with university administration and faculty for the amelioration of academic issues and concerns for student success.
- Utilizes independent judgment in the absence of the head coach and renders decisions regarding the Sailing program.
- Screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective recruits; coordinates with the Office of Admission to establish academic eligibility and helps facilitate meetings between prospective student-athletes and university personnel. Coordinates campus tours for prospective student-athletes.
- Assist in the planning and administering of the non-traditional physical training program in accordance with ICSA regulations; providing special training for the individual Sailing team members, as required.
- Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in Sailing strategy and equipment. Coordinates purchases of related equipment with the head coach and assists in routine repair and maintenance of sailing fleet and equipment.
- Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure compliance with all university, state and ICSA regulations.
- Represent the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events.
- Perform public relations and marketing activities to promote athletic programs. Perform community relations activities.
- Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.
- This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
- This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the CNU Police. The CNU Police will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for faculty and staff designated as a Campus Security Authority.
- Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position
- Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with ICSA rules and regulations.
- Ability to learn and work with Conference rules and regulations.
- Skilled in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions.
- Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects.
Required Education
A Master’s Degree; or, Bachelor’s Degree and experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Additional Consideration - Education & Experience Required
Experience coaching sailing at a competitive level.
Additional Consideration - Experience
Experience coaching in a university/college setting.
Experience in administration/recruiting at the collegiate level; progressively responsible track record.
