Job Summary

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks applicants for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor, beginning Fall 2026. Teaching professors form the core of the department’s full-time teaching faculty team and play a fundamental role in the department’s educational mission.

  • Initial appointment: Three-year term, with renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance.
  • Teaching load: 5 semester courses per academic year.
  • Responsibilities may include coordinating multi-section courses, supervising teaching assistants, serving on departmental committees, developing curriculum, and advising undergraduate and professional master’s students.
  • Preference given to applicants with expertise in statistics and data science and experience with curriculum development in these areas.

Department Overview

The Department of Applied Mathematics:

  • Teaches thousands of students and conducts research in computational, physical, and biological mathematics, as well as the statistical sciences.
  • Faculty: 20 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 12 full-time instructors.
  • Graduate students: 140+ (including ~60 PhD students).
  • Undergraduate majors: ~160 Applied Math, 230 Statistics/Data Science.
  • Additional programs: minors and a thriving BS-MS program.
  • Faculty accolades: multiple SIAM and AMS Fellows, Sloan Fellows, NSF CAREER awards, MAA Distinguished Teaching Award, CU-Boulder Hazel Barnes Prize, and other CU faculty awards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach a wide range of applied mathematics and statistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including large lower-division courses (90–150 students).
  • Coordinate multi-section courses, develop curriculum and pedagogical techniques.
  • Assist with administration of professional master’s programs.
  • Advise undergraduate and professional master’s students.

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in Mathematical Sciences or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching at the University level.

Preferred:

  • Experience in statistics and data science, including curriculum development.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary Range: $80,000–$86,000 annually.
  • One-time moving allowance: up to $10,000 (qualified candidates).
  • Onboarding allowance: $5,000.
  • Benefits: medical, dental, retirement plans, generous paid time off, tuition assistance for employees and dependents, ECO Pass for local transit.
  • 75% appointment, teaching 5 courses per academic year.
