DESCRIPTION

The John J. Cali School of Music (JJCSoM) at Montclair State University seeks a dedicated and visionary leader to guide the future of our woodwind program. As Woodwind Area Head, the successful candidate will foster innovation in curriculum and performance, cultivate an inclusive learning environment, and strengthen the school’s connections to the wider music community. JJCSoM is a vibrant, collaborative, and welcoming community that values creativity, leadership, and passion.

This role provides academic and artistic leadership for the Woodwind program, encompassing curriculum development, student mentorship, recruitment, faculty hiring and support, and program administration. The Woodwind Area Head will champion student success through individualized instruction, hands-on learning in classes, ensembles, and performances, innovative programming, and meaningful mentorship, while building a strong and diverse recruitment pipeline.

The position offers the opportunity to advance excellence in performance and learning, enrich chamber music experiences that prepare students for professional careers, and elevate the visibility and impact of woodwinds within the school, the university, and the broader music world.

Position is a two-year, ten-month, non-tenure track (NTT) appointment, with eligibility for reappointment based on established NTT procedures.

  • Manage auditions, scholarships, juries, and recitals.
  • Advance the school’s mission through collaboration and service.

Drive Innovation and Growth:

  • Expand woodwind chamber music performance opportunities, providing rich collaborative experiences.
  • Build connections with professional organizations and community partners.
  • Lead outreach efforts that enhance visibility and support for the woodwind area.

THE JOHN J. CALI SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND THE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS

The John J. Cali School of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education, music performance, music therapy, theory/composition, and jazz studies, as well as a two-year Artist’s Diploma and one-year Performer’s Certificate. Twenty-one full-time faculty members (fourteen of whom are tenured) and approximately 200 part-time instructors serve more than 500 students, who matriculate through a competitive admissions process. The school maintains strong relationships with professional performance and educational organizations along with several music schools around the world, and in the 21-22 Academic Year launched two major new initiatives with the Cali Pathways Project, focused on reducing barriers for burgeoning musicians in under-resourced communities, and the Cali Immersive Residency program, imbedding world-renowned artists and ensembles for week long residencies at the school. Its facilities provide a conservatory-like setting, consisting of the 235-seat Jed Leshowitz Recital Hall, teaching studios, music practice and rehearsal rooms, and faculty studios. Our students and faculty engage in over 300 concerts and recitals a year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Music (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Demonstrated expertise in woodwind performance and pedagogy, with a record of excellence in teaching at the collegiate level.
  • Strong leadership experience in academic or professional music settings.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven ability to recruit and mentor diverse, high-achieving students.
  • Expertise in curriculum development and program management.
  • Commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.

Salary Range

$77,105.79-$92,581.50 Annually
