Assistant to the Department Chair for Math & Stats and Physics
Job Summary/Basic Function
To assist the Department Chair of Math&Stat and Physics by assuming various administrative responsibilities for the well-being of the department.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or advanced degree in mathematics, statistics, math education, or other related fields; and three years' experience in higher education academic advising within a college for mathematics, statistics or science.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical and communication skills; proficiency in using standard office software (e.g., word, spreadsheet, emails, web browser).
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in mathematics, statistics, math education, or related fields; administrative experience at the university level; experience with Wings/Banner and other advising tools (eg, U-Achieve, Cognos); Ability to effectively communicate with students.
Essential Functions and percent of time
(30%) Class scheduling, planning, and registrations for Math & Stats and Physics Department: Manage class scheduling each term, develop two-year planning schedules for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses, oversee class prerequisite checks, oversee override requests, serve as the liaison between the department and registrar's office for class scheduling and registration issues, process course modification and inventory forms, and process Curriculog entries, verify undergraduate and graduate catalog updates.
The Assistant to the Chair position requires someone who understands our curriculum and the multi-measure placement policy and has experience working with students on their math-related issues. The functions of the position are all critical to the daily operation of the department and demand a full-time employee
Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd)
(30%) Assist the chair in implementing the multiple measures placement policies, approving pre-requisite override requests, and conducting pre-requisite checks as needed; represent the department at the college and university advising meetings, maintain student records, assist the chair on adjunct performance evaluations, meet periodically with advisors, run advising reports, maintain online news and announcements page for math and stat majors.
Non-Essential Functions and percent of time
(30%) Contact person for department academic policies and issues: Serve as point of contact for math/stat-related questions for other units on campus, talk to students about their concerns with their math/stat course and/or instructor, coordinate course transfer evaluations and credit-by-exams, assist faculty on academic policies and issues
(10%) Other: Assist the chair and the faculty on special projects or tasks as needed, including orientation/outreach events.
