Assistant Vice President - Entrepreneurship
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is an executive position responsible for leading key programs and operations within the Greg Arnold Center for Entrepreneurship, whose function is to provide resources and support to students, faculty, alumni, and the community by developing, launching, managing, and evaluating a wide range of entrepreneurial events, activities, and programs. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (Entrepreneurship).
QUALIFICATIONS
Terminal degree in business, management, finance, entrepreneurship, public administration or a related field is required.
Five years of experience in facilitating successful startups through an accelerator, incubator, angel network or venture capital fund is required. Substantial experience in entrepreneurial activity may be substituted for startup facilitation experience. Proven experience in engaging stakeholders in academic and corporate cultures to drive innovation outcomes is required. Successful record as a founder of an enterprise, of launching new ideas and/or working in a startup organization is preferred. Three or more years of professional experience in university program development and/or entrepreneurship education is preferred. Experience in marketing and communications is preferred.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Prepares and creates programmatic materials and content that support the unique needs of students interested in entrepreneurship and innovation.
- Leads the Accelerator Program by managing early-stage commercialization and startup teams within the entrepreneurial process towards a funding opportunity.
- Determines fiscal requirements and prepares budgetary recommendations for educational programs. Monitors, verifies, and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds.
- Identifies, analyzes, and interprets metrics of interest, including both quantitative and qualitative measures. Communicates results, makes recommendations, and implements improvements.
- Serves as primary point of contact for faculty, students, prospective students, and alumni interested in entrepreneurship and innovation.
- Develops and promotes a nurturing community for entrepreneurs and innovators across campus.
- Educates on and advocates for stakeholder needs within startup, entrepreneurship, and VC/PCE communities.
- Hires, trains, and supervises assigned staff, including student workers.
- Stays informed of developments and emerging trends related to the area of responsibility.
- Provides additional ad-hoc project management, coordination, and/or other support as required.
- Organizes and runs the Faculty Fellows program. Facilitates a semester-long seminar and supports the fellows’ course needs.
- Operates the Entrepreneurs-in-Residence program. Recruits participants, organizes events and activities, and supports their needs.
- Oversees the student pitch competition on campus. Gathers ideas, works on pitches, and facilitates the competition.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Serves on university, local and regional committees and boards as appropriate.
- Teaches entrepreneurial courses to support the academic program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statutes, regulations, codes and standards related to the area of responsibility.
- Extensive working knowledge of ideation, commercialization and acceleration programs.
- Knowledge and understanding of the new venture creation process from ideation and validation to launch and fundraising.
- Knowledge and understanding of industry, venture capital and non-traditional funding sources as well as academia collaboration practices to secure federal, state and local economic development grant opportunities.
- Knowledge and understanding of higher education systems and structures.
- Organizational skill in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
- Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, and word processing software.
- Skill in public speaking and delivering presentations to individuals and groups.
- Ability to provide hands-on support and strategic guidance to early-stage ventures.
- Ability to link research capabilities with market needs and trends to identify opportunities for innovations and collaborations.
- Ability to provide support for student development with a demonstrable concern for students.
- Ability to proactively identify potential challenges and make recommendations to solve them.
- Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs.
- Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.
- Ability to effectively market the programs and services of the center.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
- Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, delivering positive customer service experiences.
- Ability to train and supervise others.
- Ability and desire to promote a favorable image of the center and the university.
