Position Description
Eastern University, a diverse, Christ-centered institution that values faith, reason, and justice, seeks a visionary, experienced, and deeply committed leader to serve as the Executive Director of Student Wellbeing (EDSW). This key leadership position reports directly to the Vice President for Student Development and is instrumental in advancing the University's mission by fostering the holistic development and thriving of all students.
The Executive Director will provide strategic direction, managerial oversight, and passionate leadership for a comprehensive and integrated approach to student support across our diverse on-ground and online student populations. The successful candidate will champion a culture of wellness that is rooted in Eastern's core values, ensuring every student is prepared to impact the world through whole-person development.
Position Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities and Scope
- Mission Integration and Holistic Vision:
- Develop, implement, and maintain an innovative, holistic student wellbeing model that is specifically designed to serve the unique needs of both on-ground and online students.
- Champion a preventative, integrated, and proactive approach to student health and mental wellness, reflecting a commitment to the whole person—spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual.
- Administrative Oversight and Supervision:
- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and fiscal management for the leadership teams of key functional areas, promoting collaborative practice, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Directly supervise the following departments:
- Student Health Services
- Health Promotion/Wellness Education
- Counseling Services (Mental Health)
- College Success Program
- Interdepartmental Collaboration and Strategic Partnership:
- Establish and maintain robust, collaborative partnerships across campus to create a seamless safety net and coordinated resource pipeline for students, particularly those in crisis or experiencing distress.
- Serve as a primary liaison and active partner with:
- Sports Medicine (Athletic Health and Performance)
- Public Safety (Crisis Response and Student Safety)
- Academic Affairs, Residence Life, Office of Faith and Practice, and other critical student development partners.
- Engage with external community partners to enhance resource accessibility and culturally responsive referral networks.
- Compliance, Crisis Management, and Advocacy:
- Serve as a critical leader on the University's behavioral intervention, CARE, and crisis management teams, providing expert consultation and protocol development for student risk assessment and intervention.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and accreditation standards related to student health and mental health services (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, Title IX).
- Advocate for the needs of a diverse student body, fostering an environment of belonging, equity, and reconciliation.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: A Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) or Ph.D. in Clinical/Counseling Psychology. Current licensure as a Psychologist.
- Experience:
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in managing comprehensive student support services within a university or college setting.
- Demonstrated experience supervising and integrating distinct functional areas (e.g., medical, mental health, and academic support).
- Proven track record of developing and implementing innovative, holistic wellbeing models, including services for online/distance learners.
- A demonstrated ability to affirm and integrate the institution's core mission and values.
- Skills:
- Exceptional strategic planning, fiscal management, and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Deep understanding of the unique mental health and developmental needs of college students.
- Commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and belonging in staffing, programming, and service delivery.
