Job Description Summary

The Associate Curator is a four-year term appointment in the Mediterranean Section reporting to the Ferry Curator-in-Charge of that Section. The Associate Curator is responsible for curatorial duties that pertain directly to the Mediterranean Section's extensive collections and archives, particularly the numismatics collection. These include, but are not limited to: oversight of the Collections' protection, conservation, and accessibility; interpretation of the collections in support of Penn faculty and student class visits; supervision of any support staff in the section as needed (e.g. research associates, keepers, interns, work-study students, and volunteers); continual improvement of the collection records in the Museum's KE EMu (electronic object records management) database; facilitating the production of publications related to the Museum's numismatic collections; grant writing and fundraising to support the Section's needs; report writing for the section; and handling any special requests related to the section (e.g. researcher, student, and visitor access). The Associate Curator is also expected to publish one peer-reviewed publication every two years on average, and to contribute content to the Museum's own publications: Expedition Magazine and the Penn Museum Voices blog.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Mediterranean Section's collections, ensuring their protection, conservation, and accessibility.
  • Conduct research in areas of interest and previously agreed upon with Curator; publish at least one peer-reviewed publication every two years on average in addition to contributing content for the Museum's Expedition magazine and Penn Museum Voices blog.
  • Work with the Museum's Academic Engagement Department to be a resource for class visits to galleries and/or the Collections Study Rooms to work with Mediterranean Section materials and to mentor individual student research projects.
  • Supervise support staff in the Mediterranean Section, including keeper and work-study students.
  • Continually update and improve the information on Mediterranean Section collection records in the KE EMu Collections database feeding the Museum's public online collections.
  • Plan and execute exhibitions and/or gallery updates.
  • Facilitate the production of publications related to the Museum's collections and research projects.
  • Grant writing and fundraising to support the Mediterranean Section's needs.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master of Arts, Master of Science, and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required; Ph.D. strongly preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of Classical World material culture with a record of involvement in archaeological fieldwork in the Mediterranean and/or related to Classical World languages and numismatics.
  • Experience with exhibitions and/or grant writing preferred.
  • Computer literate, with some knowledge of collections management database systems preferred.
  • Good organizational skills, supervisory experience, multi­tasking, and collaborative abilities.
