Overview

The Princeton University Office of Advancement secures philanthropic support for the University's highest priorities by engaging and stewarding Princeton's alumni, parents, and friends. Reporting to a Senior Associate Director of Annual Giving, the Associate Director, Annual Giving plays an important role in the fundraising activities for one major Reunion campaign at Princeton plus several off-year classes by coordinating the fundraising efforts among the class with alumni volunteers, advancement office colleagues and campus colleagues.

The Associate Director must demonstrate strong skills as a leader, motivator and project manager. Experience in fundraising, managing volunteers, sales and training or similar fields preferred.

Responsibilities

Direct Fundraising Activities:

  • Manage the fundraising activities for a major Reunion campaign and several off-year campaigns; staff and support the large alumni volunteer tams.
  • Work closely with volunteers to coordinate the efforts of the classes to maximize the effectiveness of fundraising goals.
  • Recruit, coordinate and motivate volunteers to engage potential class donors most effectively.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other departments including Leadership Gifts, Principal Gifts, Gift Planning and other departments where we share prospects.

Communications Reporting:

  • Understand the mission and needs of the University and ability to articulate them effectively to potential donors, volunteers, and other staff members.
  • Prepare briefings and other reports for volunteers, campus partners, and the University's files.
  • Maintain and update information about donors in files and Advancement database.
  • Use technology effectively to research, organize, analyze and present data.
  • Analyze and synthesize data and information gathered from a variety of sources (electronic, printed, and people) in support of Annual Giving programs.
  • Produce reports which are clear and cogent and which support planning and decision-making for staff and volunteers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of five years fundraising or strong related experience.
  • Evidence of leadership ability as represented by experience as a project facilitator, trainer, fundraiser or similar position and effectiveness in working with diverse individuals in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to set clear priorities and manage time well; the ability to work independently and make sound judgments about prospects, project management responsibilities, and all other areas of performance without close day-to-day supervision.
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with people at all levels of an organization, and to collaborate and influence at a high level.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of flexibility in a highly-collaborative, fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
  • Able to exercise the highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, good judgment, consistency of output, timeliness of follow-through and strength of written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and command the respect of colleagues, volunteers and donors.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate meaningfully and creatively in goal setting, long- and short-term strategic planning, and problem-solving.
  • Exercising discretion at all times and able to keep confidential all data related to Princeton and its alumni.
  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills necessary to set and monitor progress against goals, to develop plans and time lines, and to measure success toward goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education, fundraising, alumni relations and/or volunteer management.
  • Demonstrated success in motivating people especially volunteers and to inspire donors to make annual gifts.
  • Familiarity with Princeton University.
