The Associate Director of Digital Marketing Communications plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the digital communication strategies for Wharton External Affairs to support alumni engagement and philanthropy. This individual will manage email marketing campaigns and oversee digital marketing initiatives to ensure alignment with industry best practices and Wharton's brand standards.
This role requires advanced expertise in email marketing platforms and marketing automation to develop, execute, and analyze impactful campaigns. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of Communications and Creative Director to align email marketing strategies with determined engagement and fundraising goals surrounding the School's philanthropic priorities, ensuring cohesive messaging and brand consistency across all communications deliverables. The Associate Director will also serve as a consultant and educator to internal stakeholders, fostering a culture of excellence in digital marketing communications.
Job Responsibilities:
Communications and Marketing Campaigns
- Oversee the design, development, proofing, and execution of email campaigns, ensuring high-quality, on-brand communications.
- Create custom queries, amp script-based dynamic templates, and email automation workflows in Salesforce.
- Develop and execute email A/B testing strategies to optimize performance.
- Design email journeys and behavioral campaigns based on alumni data, engagement, and communication preferences.
- Analyze email marketing performance, build detailed reports, and provide data-informed recommendations to stakeholders.
- Partner with Communications team members to create holistic and strategic marketing plans using email, texting, and print, following marketing compliance regulations and Wharton brand standards.
Project Management
- Manage and track digital marketing and creative projects from conception to completion in project management system, ensuring deadlines are met and deliverables align with organizational goals.
- Coordinate with Alumni Relations, Operations, and Development teams to support comprehensive marketing automation strategies.
- Maintain and share project analytics, providing actionable insights to improve future campaigns.
Technology & Innovation
- Serve as the resident expert in Salesforce, providing technical guidance, troubleshooting, and ongoing platform support.
- Collaborate with DARMAX and Wharton Computing on Salesforce implementation, data integrity, and integration efforts.
- Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies, applying best practices to enhance marketing performance.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Education
- Provide comprehensive guidance to internal stakeholders on digital marketing strategies and tools.
- Develop and share educational resources, templates, industry trends, and best practices in email marketing with teams to foster continuous learning.
- Participate in team meetings to offer strategic guidance and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
- Collaborate professionally and positively with colleagues to exchange ideas, suggestions, and feedback as a means to drive goals forward.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in digital marketing, with a focus on email marketing and marketing automation.
- Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
- Expert knowledge of responsive email development and principles and ability to create HTML content to work across different browsers and email platforms.
- Knowledge of email marketing compliance regulations.
- Must have advanced knowledge in Microsoft Office and ability to work with CRM databases.
- Candidate must demonstrate a high-level comfort with technology and a willingness to learn the functionality of new platforms.
- Excellent analytical skills and experience in data collection, reporting, and providing actionable insights.
- Knowledge of annual giving principles and techniques preferred, particularly direct marketing with an understanding of multi-channel solicitation strategy.
- Experience designing visual assets for digital campaigns using tools like Adobe Creative Suite applications, specifically InDesign, is preferred.
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be detail-oriented, pragmatic, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, with the ability to plan and implement within a multifaceted program strategically.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to create documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Must be able to work independently, but collaboratively, as part of a goal-oriented team.
- Some evening/weekend work.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job's level. Internal organization and peer data at Penn are also considered.
